Title: Red Threads (The Fateliner Series #1)
Author: Stacey J. Mitchell
Released: 2013
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Blog Tour organized by: Irresistible Reads Tours

~ Synopsis ~

Twenty-six-year-old Lily Robinson has her dream job in a museum, a great boyfriend, and is happy with her life - until the day she starts seeing red threads growing out of the chests of those around her.

That same day, Lily meets a stranger who seems to know her and understand what she is seeing. Lily doesn't believe him when he says she has a special ability, and it's only when he saves her life that she accepts something very strange is happening to her.

Lily's life is rapidly turned upside-down when she gets thrown into the world of fate and meets the beings who influence it.

Can she learn to control her ability to help herself and those around her who need it most?

Will she actually want to when she finds out what she has to do?

~ Excerpt ~

"I'm here, and I've got supplies." Lily took a step back from the speaker, released the intercom button, and waited for her best friend's head to appear at the window.

The window opened, and Georgia's head poked out, her highlighted hair dangling in front of her eyes. "You know no one's allowed in without Ben and Jerry's."

Lily rolled her eyes and pulled a carton out of the bag on her shoulder. "Well, I have two flavours - Half Baked and Phish Food. Now let me in before it melts."

Georgia grinned and her head disappeared back into her flat.

"I hope you've kept your side of the bargain," Lily said when Georgia opened the door and stood aside to let her in. "I'm expecting films with Channing Tatum or Gerard Butler. Or both together, if such a thing exists." Lily walked through the living room and into the kitchen area, where she dumped her bag on the counter.

"In that case, you'll love this," Georgia said, holding up two DVD cases. "Magic Mike and 300. Am I the best friend ever, or what?"

Lily whistled under her breath. "We're in for a treat tonight." She knew her way around Georgia's flat almost as well as she knew her own house, and she grabbed two spoons and two wine glasses and cracked open the bottle of red that Georgia passed her.

"So what's new with you, then?" Georgia asked, as they carried the wine and ice cream through to the coffee table in front of the sofa. She switched the television on and held the two DVDs up, prompting Lily to choose.

"300 first." Lily took a sip of her wine. "Not a lot really, work's the same as ever, Nick's fine. Things are just ticking along nicely, you know." She shrugged indifferently. "Come on, you must have some news for me."

"Me?" Georgia had put the DVD into the machine and was now settling down on the sofa. "Little old perpetually single me?" She rolled her eyes.

Book Blitz ~ Almost Dead by Rebecca A. Rogers

Title: Almost Dead
Author: Rebecca A. Rogers
Release date: September 15th 2013
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Book Blitz organized by:  Irresistible Reads Tours

~ Synopsis ~

Seventeen-year-old Flora Mackey is not exactly thrilled to wake up from a car accident and find out she's a ghost. Making this lifelike hell even worse is being trapped with her arch enemy and collision partner, Laney Tipps. The two normally couldn't get along if their lives depended on it, but now they have no choice.

After recovering from the initial shock of seeing their lifeless bodies - and that they can't escape each other - Flora and Laney have to find a way out of the twisted, gray realm. But they quickly learn that the farther they stray from their motionless corpses, the weaker they become. Luckily Sara, a spirit guide, shows up to help. Sara informs them they'll have to wait for someone in their city to die so they can take their place in the land of the living.

What's scarier than waiting in purgatory? Time. If Flora and Laney don't return to the physical world and leave clues for their families that they're still alive, they'll never be found. Which sucks, because once their bodies give out, their souls will be permanently stuck in the afterlife.

~ Guest Post by Rebecca A. Rogers ~

Halloween is right around the corner, which means autumn is in the air: sweaters, scarves, vibrant leaves, carved pumpkins, coffee and lattes with spicy aromas and flavors. The list is literally endless. Typically, Halloween evokes images of ghosts and things that go bump in the night, but it can also mean some really good (and really creepy) reading material. Here is a top-ten list of books-turned-movies to set the mood, in no particular order:

1. The Shining by Stephen King - REDRUM is one of the ultimate go-to expressions when someone brings up The Shining in conversation. And who can forget those creepy twins?

2. It by Stephen King - The movie was enough to give me nightmares as a child. Clowns. Halloween. I'm already getting goosebumps.

3. Dracula by Bram Stoker - A classic, that's all there is to it.

4. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty - Who doesn't love a good demonic possession, along with split-pea soup? ;)

5. The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris - Hello, Clarice. *shudders*

6. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice - Okay, it's definitely not as creepy as some of the others, but Anne Rice is pretty much the queen of paranormal. Let's be honest, Halloween wouldn't be the same without the supernatural.

7. Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin - I remember seeing bits and pieces of this movie as a child, and it freaked me out. What's better than horror? Psychological horror.

8. The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson - The fact that this was based on a true story makes it even scarier.

9. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury - I was disturbed by this movie when I was younger, and it still weirds me out today, but there's nothing quite like a creepy carnival coming to town.

10. Psycho by Robert Bloch - Ah, Norman Bates. Yet another great psychological horror story.

What are some of your favorite books-turned-movies? Are there any must-haves to watch on Halloween night?

In short: I'd insert something here along the lines of living in the Northeast or Europe with my wonderful husband and our dogs, but these things haven't happened yet. Instead, I'll tell you I'm an avid gamer, chocoholic, coffee addict, animal lover, and own way too many books and shoes.

~ A Dark Faerie Tale Series Book Trailer ~

~ Excerpt ~

No one moved, making her even more nervous. The merfolk guards flicked their tails to hover, weapons pointed toward them as they held their ground. Nautilus responded with the same resonating sound. It was unsettling, feeling the water echo around her, but it didn't hurt her ears any more. She focused her eyes on the one merman who was obviously their leader. His scales shone more crystalline, and his arms were plastered with an array of platinum arm bands which glinted as he moved, pointing at them. He looked quite intent on yelling at them, his lips moving in strange, haunting calls with echoing clicks, reminding her of dolphin speak. She hoped he wouldn't be using that long, sharp and dangerous-looking triton on them. From the sound of his voice, it wasn't looking good for them.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Excerpt

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.

In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.

A cold shudder shot through me.

Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.

My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening.

Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn't stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.

Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn't been seeing things. The old saying "the camera never lies," came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.

~ Excerpt from Embrace ~

There was something in the way he'd said it that sent an elated shiver through me. Not because I was nervous to be alone with him, but because I had a sudden urge to cover his mouth with mine. That would be so unlike me, but at that moment I wanted to grab the front of his shirt and pull him closer. It took me a second to compose myself, and I had to focus on my words to get them out in something that resembled a calm tone.

"Oh, really?" I glanced around his dungeon-like room. I'd happily be his prisoner.

"Really." Isaac crouched down, one hand resting on the floor on either side of me, his smile devious. "Aren't you in the least bit curious why?"

My pulse raced in a mix of excitement and longing. His cologne combined with the scents of his room and made my head spin. My reply came out weaker than I meant it to.

"Why?"

"First, it gave me an excuse to get you down here." He ran his hand over my ponytail, giving it a gentle tug before placing his hand back on the floor next to me. He was enjoying himself. "And second, now I can do this."

Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway ~ Resilient by Patricia Vanasse

Welcome to my stop on the Resilient Blog Tour hosted by CBB Book Promotions. Click here to follow along with the tour! :D

Title: Resilient
Author: Patricia Vanasse
Publication date: August 24th 2013
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance
Source: Review copy
Blog Tour organized by: CBB Book Promotions

~ Synopsis ~

Livia has never felt like she fits in. As normal as it sounds, Livia is anything but ordinary. She can feel every emotion of every single person around her, and it's maddening. In pursuit of some psychic quiet, she moves with her family from New York City to Whidbey Island in the lush and sleepy Pacific Northwest. But when a horseback riding accident in her new home gives her a broken leg that heals in a day, she finds that another unexplained ability has manifested, and her life isn't about to get any easier.

Adam has no problem fitting in and making friends. In fact, he's the top of the school, the boy everyone knows and loves. However, people only see what he allows them to. No one knows what Adam is truly capable of. After witnessing Livia's accident, Adam sees something intriguing in her quick recovery, something that gives him hope that he's not alone.

Adam is the only one whose emotions Livia can't read. Afraid of not knowing what goes on behind his dark eyes, Livia decides to keep him at a distance. Yet the more she tries to ignore him, the more alluring he becomes, and while their personal quests for identity will inevitably bring them closer together, it is the confirmation of what they really are that threatens to tear them apart.

Resilient, told in alternating point of views, is a gripping story of survival and romance, in which two teenagers face the consequences of being anything but normal.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 4 / 5

I really loved Resilient! Patricia Vanasse made Livie's abilities seem so fresh and original. Livie is am empath and can feel everyone's emotions just by being relatively near them, which would be utterly exhausting. There were times Livie wasn't sure if the emotions she felt were hers or someone else's, which happens when she's around many people at once. Not only is she empathic, but every few years near her birthday, she develops new abilities. After the horseback riding incident, she discovers she has five abilities.

Livie is very down to earth and relatable. I connected with her character right away, and Patricia Vanasee did an excellent job conveying how exhausted having Livie's main ability makes her. I felt exhausted for her! It's understandable that Livie would feel like a freak and just want to be normal, but I didn't want her to feel that way. She's such a good person - there isn't anything she wouldn't do for those she loves.

I guessed correctly that Adam would grate on Livie's nerves from the beginning. He came across as snarky and arrogant, but as the story progresses, he shows different sides of his personality causing me to really like him. He's my book boyfriend now! I thought their interactions were entertaining and comical. He has surprising secrets but won't reveal them to anyone except his best friend, Kyle. I wanted Adam and Livie to confide in each other so they could not feel so alone and freakish. Every time they were about to tell each other, something caused them to continue keeping their secrets for good reason.

Resilient has everything - action, romance, danger, excitement, and suspense - and will keep you engrossed until the very end.  I was on the edge of my seat and had to find out what the secrets were that Livie's family were keeping from her and if the people after Livie and Adam would eventually catch up to them. I was riveted and chose finishing this book over sleep, and I'd gladly do it again!
