Synopsis

The daughter of a radical doomsday prepper, Leo Marrok spent her entire life preparing for the end. A skilled fighter and perfect marksman, Leo is her father's second-in-command when Armageddon comes to pass. Together, they lead a group of survivors to a secure bunker deep in the Appalachian Mountains.

Vincent Marrok is willing to take extreme measures to repopulate their broken world. Leo's refusal marks her as a traitor. With father and daughter at odds for the first time, their frail community is thrust into turmoil. Until the unthinkable happens, a blood-thirsty horde arrives. The impending attack will destroy all that they have worked for.

To protect her home and everything she believes in, Leo puts her faith in the arms of the enemy - a creature only rumored to exist - the one she calls Halloween. An alliance born out of necessity evolves into feelings Leo is ill-equipped to handle.

The Dead Days Journal is a post-apocalyptic story of love and family told through Leo Marrok's first-hand account and the pages of Vincent's personal journal, giving two very different perspectives on what it takes to survive.

Mature themes, adult language, sexual situations, violence and gore. 18+

"Count like this: one Mississippi, two Mississippi, and so on until you reach one hundred and thirty. Then light it. I'll be counting with you."

If I ran fast enough, I'd make the front entrance before our distraction went sky high. Lincoln and I were finally using the fireworks he'd been hording, along with my father's highly combustible concoction of extra fine sawdust and gunpowder. By no means was this a celebration, but an explosion, even of the sparkly variety, would draw everyone's attention to the cave and away from the courtyard - away from Halloween. I just had to reach him before anyone noticed.

Once he gets a taste of my blood, he'll be fine.

I double-checked the fuses I'd twisted together and the ignition line we'd run along the dirt floor. I wasn't entirely sure the cave opening wouldn't collapse; but if it did, well, it'd be one less entrance we'd have to worry about protecting.

"As soon as this sparks, head to the outlook room. You're my eyes and backup if anything goes wrong. Are you sure you're up for this, Linc?"

Lincoln re-adjusted the shoulder strap of his rifle. The gun was almost as tall as him. "Yeah."

I ruffled the white-blond hair on the top of his head with the palm of my hand, fighting the urge to give him a bone-crushing hug. "Okay. Be careful, baby brother."

Lincoln stumbled forward, reaching for my arm. "Leo, wait!"

"What is it?" Please do this for me. It's Halloween's only chance.

Lincoln's pale green eyes pooled with tears. "I'm sorry..."

I snatched my arm out of his tender hands. "What?" Shit, it's almost dark! We don't have time for this.

Lincoln shuffled his feet and then watched as a small dirt cloud dispersed over his shoes. "I called you a liar. I only said it because I was mad. That vampire wasn't a dream. He was real. The dream didn't come back, he did. You never lied to me."

I bent over, took his round chin in my hand, and raised his head. Looking him square in the eye, I gave a hard nod. "And I never will."

Lincoln responded with a curt nod of his own and then swiped away a falling tear. He believed me. I was his big sister. I'd always be there for him. He'd never doubt me. We'd never have this misunderstanding again. And now I knew I'd never be able to leave him.

"Start now..." I slipped through the steel door.

Behind me, in a soft soprano voice, Lincoln began counting. "One Mississippi, two..."

The door clicked shut and I took off at a dead run, silently counting along with him.

Excerpt

"Why, Jared Hoffman, do you not want this?" I tease, slowly unbuttoning his shirt.

He smiles, his hands bracing themselves on the bed at either side of my head. "I didn't say that...it's just I don't want to rush anything."

Jared's shirt falls open when I finally reach the last button. His perfect abs are shadowed and defined by the moonlight. My eyes start up his chest. "Rush?" I whisper softly as my hands graze their way up his biceps that frame my face. "Jare...this has been seven long years in the making. I think we've waited long enough."

He pauses for a second. I hear his breath hitch in his throat as his dark eyes study my face. For some reason, I'm surprised when I feel Jared's lips on mine. The passion between us is renewed at my admission. It's my turn to moan against his lips. My legs automatically slide up and down his, causing my dress to hike up slightly before my legs wrap themselves around his waist. His hands make their way up my side slowly as if ingraining into memory the curve of my body. My hands have automatically found their way to his belt. I slip my fingers through it and release the hook, swinging it open. Before I know it, I'm unbuttoning his jeans. That's when I feel his hands squeeze me tight. His lips leave mine for the first time since I spoke, and I feel them slowly trace their way down my neck. My fists clench against the skin on his waist.

"Oh, Jared," I groan.

His body freezes above me for a fraction of a second. His head lifts out of the crook of my neck to meet my eyes again.

"Do you know how long I've waited to hear you call my name like that?" he whispers.

My hands find their way to his face and mingle with his hair. "There's more where that came from." I shoot him a sexy smirk before pulling his lips back to mine.

Teaser:

“You’re late,” the voice says, and the gate buzzes.

I don’t question my luck, just open the gate and walk through to the lobby door, which also buzzes open for me. I don’t know whom Heather is expecting, and I don’t care if it makes this errand easier.

I knock on the door to 8D. A voice inside calls for me to come in. I twist the knob and push the door open, taking a step inside. Suddenly, water gushes down from overhead, cascading over me. I put my hands up like I can stop the ice-cold liquid. It soaks my hair and my clothes. Drenched and stunned, I push back my wet bangs and wipe at my eyes until I can see again.

I shiver, from both cold and shock, as water drips down my neck and into my jacket. My heart hammers in my chest and I take quick breaths to regain my bearings.

A blue plastic bucket has fallen onto the wood floor in front of me. Someone dumped water on me. Why would anyone do that?

A young woman stands just inside the apartment, watching me. She wears black vinyl and ripped fishnets and her short hair is black with purple streaks. She walks toward me, holding a cylindrical package of salt with the top cut off.

“What the he—” I start. She thrusts the container forward. White salt flies out. I close my eyes, flinch back. It sticks to my wet hair, skin, and clothes and gets into my mouth. I cough and keep my eyes shut, afraid to get salt in them.

“Damn,” the woman hisses. I hear the sounds of fumbling, a drawer opening and closing. Behind me, I hear the door click shut. Then there’s more fumbling and the sound of metal scrapes against a counter. A gun? Panic washes over me, then turns to fury.

“What’s wrong with you?” I demand.

The voice mutters about how difficult it is to get holy water. I use the lining of my coat to wipe my face so I can see again and slowly blink my eyes open. My hair drips onto my shoulders and the puddle spreads out around me on the hardwood floor. My legs and boots are soggy and coated in white specks of salt.

I stare at Heather—this has to be Heather Bancroft. She glares back like she might be able to make my head explode if she concentrates hard enough.

“I can’t believe it didn’t work,” she says. “Why aren’t you melting?”

“Because I’m not the Wicked Witch of the West,” I say. I try to brush the salt off my leggings and skirt, but it sticks to my palms. I look at the door, which has clicked shut behind me, and then back at her. Her eyes are wild and shift erratically.

“Are you a demon?” she asks.

“No,” I say, surprised at the question.

“Then why are you here?”

“I have a delivery for you.”

Red by Alyxandra Harvey ~ Blog Tour: #Review & #Giveaway @entangledteen @alyxandrah

Welcome to my stop on the Red Blog Tour hosted by YA Bound Book Tours. Click here to follow along with the tour schedule.

Title: Red
Author: Alyxandra Harvey
Release Date: March 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Source: Copy for review

Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Kobo

Synopsis

Bad girls burn hot...

Red is the color of Kia Alcott's hair.
It's her temper, which blazes hot and always gets Kia into way too much trouble.
And it's the color of fire. Fires that Kia can start...just by thinking about them.

When her latest "episode" gets her kicked out of school, Kia is shipped off to her grandmother, who works for the wealthy Blackwoods. It's an estate shrouded in secrets, surrounded by rules, and presided over by a family that is far from normal...including the gorgeous and insolent Ethan Blackwood.

Ethan knows far more about the dangers of the forest surrounding the estate than Kia can ever imagine. For this forest has teeth, and Ethan is charged with protecting the outside world from its vicious mysteries.

But inside, even the most vibrant shade of red doesn't stand a chance against the dark secrets of the Blackwood family...

Red's synopsis sounded intriguing to me, and that cover is gorgeous! Alyxandra Harvey is an author who's been on my to-read list for quite a while, and I'm thrilled to say I'm a fan.

I really liked Kia right away - she's snarky (I'd snark right along with her any day!), clever, and oh yeah, can start fires with her mind. As you can probably imagine, that's a problem, especially because she can't control it - she gets kicked out of her school and sent to live with her grandmother, Abby.

One of my favorite television series of all time is Heroes, so when Kia decides not to tell the truth about things she's getting in trouble for even though they aren't her fault, I totally get that. She's afraid the truth could go one of two ways - no one would believe her, or she'd become a government experiment. In Heroes, the characters had extraordinary abilities like Kia, and they were hunted down by the government, so Kia's reasoning was solid to me.

I kept wondering why Kia calls her grandmother Abby instead of Grandma. They saw each other once a year before Kia goes to live with her, so they don't know each other all that well. But still, it seemed odd to me. I liked Abby.

Ethan runs hot and cold. At times I liked him, and other times I didn't. He can be kind and generous but also just plain rude. Because he's in the know about the mysterious woods from the start and Kia isn't, I guess he was going for the tough love thing? Maybe he thought he was helping her out? But he can see there's more to her than she lets on, and he's smart. There's much more to her than meets the eye.

Red is fast paced with plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested and turning the pages. You can feel Kia's struggle to control her ability, and I wanted her to come out with the truth but understood why she was hesitant about the idea. For me, Red is a quick read, and I was engrossed from the beginning. Kia had a lot to do with that. I just really loved her character from the first page. I recommend this to anyone who loves a good young adult paranormal read.

About the Author

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women's rights, and ice cream.

Among her favourite books are 'The Wood Wife' by Terri Windling, 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she's smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.

Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.

Pawns by Estelle MacDonald ~ #Review

Title: Pawns
Series: Timeless Games #0.5
Author: Estelle MacDonald
Publication date: January 8th 2014
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Source: Complimentary copy for review

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis

Leslie, the fifteen-year-old red-haired spitfire, starts life the daughter of nameless, uncaring parents. Abandoned at the side of the road, she stands shivering, with no skills beyond knowing how to pace her way through weeks of starvation. A group of runaways take her in, led by a particularly charming, strange boy. They take her in, giving her a chance at a new start with a full belly and a place to sleep - but nothing comes for free. How will she survive her new life, with her options slowly disappearing as this fateful night wears on?

In the novella, Pawns - a prequel to Rook, the first book in the Timeless Games series - we find out more about Leslie, who was a character I despised in Rook. Here I find out she's got to be in the running for worst parent ever. Her mother and father are terrible, horrible people, especially as parents. I can't describe just how awful they are to their only child. Pawns starts out with her mother calling her a "needy little snot," which was the very first line. I couldn't help myself - I had a strong desire to slap her mom!

Leslie's background fleshed out explains a lot about her, and I understand her much more than I did in Rook. She was jealous and willing to murder in that book, and now I know why with the events that happen in this novella. I think Rook should be read before Pawns - my experience with Leslie might have been altered dramatically had I read Pawns first, and I wouldn't want it to be different than what it was for me. She's meant to be hated in Rook for good reason.

I wonder what the next book will be like, and with this surprising ending, I'm looking forward to more in the Timeless Games series!

Synopsis

An opium-addicted beauty.

An infamous poet living in self-imposed exile.

An ancient treasure about to fall into the wrong hands.

Melanie Karsak's Chasing the Star Garden takes readers on a thriller adventure from the gritty opium dens of gaslamp London to the gem-colored waters of the ancient world. Lily Stargazer, a loveable but reckless airship racer with a famous lover and shattered past, reluctantly plunges into a centuries-old mystery in a romantic adventure best described as Dan Brown meets Mary Shelley.

It all begins on one of the worst days of Lily's life. She just lost the London leg of the 1823 Airship Grand Prix. To top it off, a harlequin fleeing from constables shoved a kaleidoscope down her pants, told her to fly to Venice, then threw himself from her airship tower. What's a girl to do? For Lily, the answer is easy: drink absinthe and smoke opium.

Lily's lover, Lord Byron, encourages her to make the trip to Venice. Lily soon finds herself at the heart of an ancient mystery which has her running from her past and chasing true love and the stars along the way.

**Due to steamy scenes and depictions of drug use, this novel is intended for mature readers.**

I bought Chasing the Star Garden just a couple of months ago in eBook format but have been getting into audio books lately. I've been dying to read this book and so jumped at the chance to review this story in audio book format.

Listening to Chasing the Star Garden is a beautiful experience. I love the narrator, Libby Clearfield! She can speak in a variety of accents, including Italian and French. She brings the story to life and speaks clearly. I'd definitely listen to another audio book narrated by her.

Chasing the Star Garden is engrossing and action packed with romance sprinkled throughout. The heat level to some of the love scenes definitely makes this a book for adults!

Lily is a character who quickly became a favorite of mine. She has a painful past she escapes from by smoking opium and drinking absinthe, and you see what her past is like through flashbacks. While Lily is strong, independent, and fierce, she also has a vulnerability.

I didn't realize at first how much Lord Byron and Sal meant to her, but it soon became clear they were much more than just her lovers. They both know about the other, and I think it was harder for Sal to accept that she also has Lord Byron. I think Sal loved Lily and didn't want to share her with anyone, but I also think Lily knew that and was scared of that kind of love.

The way Greek mythology ties into the treasure hunt in the story was interesting and well done. As if airship racing wasn't exciting enough, there's more excitement with the danger and adventure that comes with searching for the treasure before it falls into the wrong hands. Lily's very life is on the line.

Chasing the Star Garden confirms my love of the steampunk genre, and I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Airship Racing Chronicles, Chasing the Green Fairy! The title alone would make anyone want to dive into the story even if she/he didn't know what it was about, I'm certain of it! I definitely need more Lily!
