Synopsis

NOTE: This book has a guileless elf heroine you can't help but fall in love with, a hunky hero who knows how to come to a girl's - er, elf's - rescue, some serious kissing under the mistletoe and lots of steamy hot romance!

Being one of Santa's elves isn't all sugar plums and candy canes.

At least not for Sosie. Taller than the other elves, she's always had a problem fitting in at the North Pole, so when the transport sled she's on breaks down in New York City on Christmas Eve, she can't resist slipping away to explore the world of the "big people." While she's having fun, the transport sled takes off, leaving the naiive elf stranded.

Fortunately, handsome police detective Derek Clayton comes to her rescue, offering to let her stay at his apartment. Having heard horror stories about the big people, Sosie is both surprised and relieved to meet such a kind, sweet man. Not to mention one so gorgeous and well-built.

Even though Sosie expects the North Pole to send out a search party any day, she finds herself falling for Derek anyway. She desperately wants to tell him she's an elf, but knows he'll never believe her. When the lies and omissions start to pile up, Derek can draw only one conclusion - Sosie is working for the mob boss he's been after for years.

Just when things seem like they can't get any worse, the chief of elfin security shows up to drag Sosie back to the North Pole. How is a runaway elf supposed to overcome a determined security elf, dangerous mobsters and a suspicious boyfriend all while keeping her pointed ears secret?

SANTA'S WAYWARD ELF was a fun and imaginative read with lots of hot sex that made me blush. Paige Tyler's fresh take on elves, Santa, and the North Pole was entertaining. Sosie is an elf who isn't like the other elves - she's taller than all of them and isn't happy living in the North Pole any longer (where she makes sex toys by the way). And I thought only children's toys were made up there, lol! She's heading to the South Pole at her request when the transport sled she's on breaks down, and that's where her adventures begin.

Sosie is the kind of character you'll like right away. She's cute with her wide-eyed innocence and love of all things fun. While she was an outcast at the North Pole, she's seen as very gorgeous among humans. I couldn't help but worry about her trying to navigate her way among humans due to her lack of knowledge about our world, not to mention the fact that she's too trusting though the North Pole news makes elves think humans are violent and dangerous.

While Sosie is very naive, she's really experienced in bed. A lady in public, a tiger in the bedroom - every guy's dream, right? I couldn't help but roll my eyes at that a bit. While the sex scenes were super hot, her sexual expertise didn't seem to go with her personality. But there was also a lot of sweet romance. I did like Sosie and Derek together - they not only had sizzling chemistry but also could spend time together hanging out and having fun. They went well together.

I just wasn't that into Derek. I liked him in the beginning, then I didn't like him. I ended up liking him again later but not as much as I did in the beginning. If he's such a great guy like everyone he knows tells Sosie, why did he let himself get so easily talked into thinking she was this terrible person? It was obvious to me that she wasn't secretly working for a notorious mobster and not just because I knew her side of the story before he did.

I liked him, I just wasn't in LOVE with him. He is a good guy, but he turned ugly to me when he hurled insult after insult at Sosie. He took out his problems on her, and while that's a very human thing to do, it just wasn't right. She's so innocent! She doesn't know what so many things in the human world are called or used for - I don't know how he could have thought the worst of her. Okay, enough ranting, lol.

Overall, I enjoyed SANTA'S WAYWARD ELF. It's the perfect story to read anytime of the year. I particularly liked reading this book on a cold winter's day snuggled up in a warm blanket, but I'd read this any day of the year. Sosie is a fun character to get to know and hang out with, and the situations she gets into will make you laugh out loud. She just made the book with her spunk and hope that everything would turn out all right.

Blurb ~
The last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning she’s staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.

All at once she’s living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though he’s vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family – each claiming to be part of who she once was – a girl and a past somehow discarded.

Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesn’t know who to trust especially when Tommy’s lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and find her way home.

~Excerpt ~
“Where am I, exactly? I mean . . . what is this place?”

He smiled. “The Palace of Portici.”

“A palace?” I squinted, then flipped the hair off of my face. I was Ann Leigh, wasn’t I? Ann Leigh, strawberry blonde, five-foot-four, dreadfully allergic to cats. I grabbed the ends of my hair again and looked down at it. It wasn’t yellow-red at all but more like brown butter pecan. My head hummed. Martino was still grinning, as if he was more amused by me now that he was sure I wasn’t dead.

He spoke again. “Orto Botanico.”

“Botanical garden?”

“Si, yes. Ana, ora andiamo? La Pasticceria Tartoni?”

“Yes. We’ll go to the pastry shop now.” And I went with him. Even though, for all I knew, he could have been one of those freaks who got his jollies from attacking innocent young girls. But then, for all I knew, I wasn’t an innocent young girl.

The sky in Campania, Italy, looked familiar; the clouds were funny cotton ball shapes that could be giant sheep— pecore? If I were Ann Leigh from Nebraska, then how did I know those clouds, those words?

I'm excited for this book, and I'll tell you why. How freaky would it be to wake up on a different continent with eighteen months missing from your memory? You have no idea what's happened to you, who you are, and your memories of the time before are fragmented at best. What do you do? That's exactly what I want to find out about Ann - what is she going to do? Is she being lied to? So many possibilities!!

Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway ~ The Replacement by Rachael Wade

Hey guys! Welcome to my stop on THE REPLACEMENT blog tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. Click here for the full tour schedule. :D

Title: The Replacement
Author: Rachael Wade
Publication date: January 27th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult
Source: Review copy

Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis

*Contains sexually explicit content and mature subject matter, including language and elements of abuse.*

A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman's self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I'm twenty-three years old and I'm known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing - the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I'm not completely reckless. I'm safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone's girlfriend. I'm convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I'd go to in order to keep it that way.

My Review

My Rating: 5 / 5

I went into THE REPLACEMENT looking for an emotional read and was given so much more than I was expecting. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to find out more about Elise, this girl known as the town whore. And why is she so desperate to keep this reputation? What is she afraid of? Something must have happened to her, I reasoned, but when I was given glimpses into her childhood, I couldn't even have imagined what I'd find there. Her mom? Worst advice giver ever. Her dad? Well, let's just say I had to keep reminding myself during his scenes that this book doesn't take place in the 50's. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

THE REPLACEMENT emotionally affected me much more than I had anticipated. I had to stop and put the book down because I couldn't see to read through my tears. It was as if a dam inside me had broken. I cried for the girl Elise could have become had she been given loving parents and cried for the girl Elise had become - someone who believes she poisons people and doesn't deserve to be loved by anyone. The scenes from her childhood are absolutely heartbreaking.

I could identify with Elise's need to self destruct, and I think that's what broke open the floodgates for me. For completely different reasons, I know what it's like to want to destroy myself while everyone else watches helplessly. One of the people watching Elise self destruct? Jay. He's a much needed father figure for Elise - he cares about her and shows it unlike her own father. Scenes with him made me cry, too!

Ryder was amazing. I couldn't believe how he refused to give up on Elise no matter how much she tried to push him away. He didn't care about her past - he wanted a future with her. On the other hand, she felt she was broken and undeserving of that kind of future. One of my favorite scenes between Elise and Ryder was when they first kissed - she thought to herself that must be what a real kiss was like, and all this time she had been duped into thinking she'd been kissed before. That was a magical moment I was happy she experienced. Every girl needs a Ryder!

After finishing the book, I was emotionally exhausted, but it was worth it. Reading THE REPLACEMENT was cathartic for me - I've been needing a good cry, and this definitely brought it out of me. Elise's story will captivate you and bring out a wide range of emotions. You'll become so immersed in her story you won't even notice anything going on around you. And grab a box of tissues - you're gonna need them!

Author: Amy Spalding

Genre: Young Adult, Realistic Fiction, Contemporary

Synopsis:

For Kellie Brooks, family has always been a tough word to define. Combine her hippie mom and tattooist stepdad, her adopted overachieving sister, her younger half brother, and her tough-love dad, and average Kellie's the one stuck in the middle, overlooked and impermanent. When Kellie's sister finally meets her birth mother and her best friend starts hanging with a cooler crowd, the feeling only grows stronger.

But then she reconnects with Oliver, the sweet and sensitive college guy she had a near hookup with last year. Oliver is intense and attractive, and she's sure he's totally out of her league. But as she discovers that maybe intensity isn't always a good thing, it's yet another relationship she feels is spiraling out of her control.

It'll take a new role on the school newspaper and a new job at her mom's tattoo shop for Kellie to realize that defining herself both outside and within her family is what can finally allow her to feel permanent, just like a tattoo.

My Thoughts:

My Rating: 5 / 5

INK IS THICKER THAN WATER was such a pleasure to read! Kellie is the kind of character who not only reminds me of myself when I was in high school but will also stick with me for a long time to come. She has a fresh unique voice and is a master at throwing out witty barbs - nothing that ever hurts anyone but will make them laugh in a feel good kind of way. It's as though she doesn't have to try to be funny; she just is. She listens to the 60's, and one of her all-time favorite songs is "Bus Stop" by The Hollies, which is a song I swear by. That's one of the songs from back then that I've made all of my friends listen to whether they wanted to or not. ;) So our shared love of music from that decade really endeared her to me even more.

The story is so well done - I really felt like I was back in high school again. Kellie and her best friend, Kaitlyn, begin growing apart, which can happen often during those years. It was painful to read because I can identify with how much it hurts and how much you wish you could stop it from happening but you know there isn't anything you can do. Once it happens, it happens. You can't force a friendship, especially when two people begin growing and changing into new people. What Kellie and Kaitlyn once shared that cemented their friendship eventually became lost in the shuffle when they each began walking a new path. That path just didn't happen to be beside each other anymore.

Thank god for Kellie's mom, stepdad, and cute little brother! Kellie's biological father is an ass. He outright favors Kellie's sister, Sara, because she gets all A's and has several colleges courting her already. The morning he told Kellie he wanted to take Sara out to breakfast alone to talk about college with her made me so angry! I wished I could've been there to tell him off. Kellie's dad's behavior can be common for a parent of a teen unfortunately, which is another reason this story is so real. I'm glad Kellie lives with her mom and stepdad who seemed to be much more loving and supportive of who she is. Kellie's dad didn't accept his daughter for who she is - he was too busy being disappointed that she wasn't who he wanted her to be. As a parent, I think that's just plain wrong.

Kellie and Sara seem to be pretty close, which was surprising to me because I expected an overachiever like Sara to treat Kellie horribly. They had more of a positive relationship than most sisters I know, but that relationship became strained when Sara begins forming a relationship with her biological mother. Sara explained things to her mother differently than how they really are, and Kellie was quick to defend their family. Kellie knows their parents are unusual compared to most parents, but she doesn't feel like anything about them needs to be hidden from Sara's biological mother. I loved how Kellie jumped to their defense but hoped Kellie and Sara would repair their relationship and become close again.

I liked Oliver but also had a strange feeling something was off about him. I thought at times he could be a little too intense, especially when they about had sex the first time they met. As much as I identified with Kellie and as much as it pains me to say this, I'm a parent myself (I feel so flippin' old sometimes!) and can see potential fallout from choices young characters in the YA genre make. I didn't want Kellie to wrap herself up in their relationship so much that she lost herself, but isn't that something what often happens to us at that age? I know I lost myself for a while in a relationship because everything was so new and exciting that nothing else mattered for a while. You know, hormones raging and all that. When you're first in a relationship, that person can turn out to be someone completely different than who you thought they were, as in this case with Kellie and Oliver.

Everything about INK IS THICKER THAN WATER is organically told, and I loved seeing Kellie's story unfold. Within her family, friends, boyfriend, and just the world in general, she was finding herself gradually changing with new interests and new friends coming into her life. Nothing about this story is over the top or forced, and I really appreciated reading a story like this that seemed so real. It's as though I know these characters. The writing is fantastic with the way the author had the characters interacting and changing subtly over the course of the novel. I was happy with the ending. With the way this story is told, it just wouldn't be satisfying if everything had been completely tied up by the end, and I'm okay with that. I'm definitely recommending this to every reader I know!

~ Synopsis ~

*A novella to the best-selling New Adult novel STRIPPED*

The sexual content in this novella is more explicit than STRIPPED and is recommended for 17+

She was broken when I met her, shattered from the death of her sister and running from love. Not to sound like an egotistical douche or anything, but I fixed her. Put her back together, filled in the cracks, and made her whole. A true fairytale in her eyes.

But now real life is getting in the way: school, jobs, and the unexpected opportunity to travel the world under a legendary photographer. This internship will open doors not even my father's influence could. It's something I've been waiting all my life for. But so is Quinn, and accepting this internship will mean leaving her.

And breaking her all over again.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 3 / 5

I read Stripped and Without You back to back in one day. I couldn't leave Quinn and Torrin, and when it was over, I couldn't stop thinking about this couple. Stripped left such a deep impression on me that I almost feel like it wasn't fair of me to read them so close together.

While I was wanting more of Quinn and Torrin, I find that I enjoy Quinn's point-of-view more than Torrin's. Nothing against Torrin - I love him! I think I wasn't quite ready for them to be tested quite so soon after just getting together.

I was disappointed with Torrin in this novella because he underestimates Quinn - she wouldn't stand in the way of his dream, and he should know that. I loved the sizzle of their relationship being explored further here, and overall, I liked reading more of Quinn and Torrin's story.

CAUGHT UP IN YOU is a companion novella to be enjoyed before or after reading OUT FROM UNDER YOU, or as a stand-alone story.

~ Excerpt ~

"So," she said, breaking me out of my reverie. "What is your deal?"

I laughed. "My deal?"

She nodded. "Your deal.

I couldn't be sure but I swore I heard her voice slur slightly on the last word. My hopes instantly rose. Tipsy Lia would be a lot more willing to take clothes off than sober Lia. That I could be sure of.

"I don't have a deal," I insisted.

She squinted. "Oh, you so have a deal. All guys like you have a deal."

"How many times are we going to say the word deal? Should we turn it into a drinking game? Make things interesting?" I flagged down the waitress and ordered a Jack and Coke. Lia asked for the same.

"Do you always drink Jack and Coke?" I asked.

She shrugged. "Maybe."

I laughed. "Are you trying to be mysterious?"

Her eyes twinkled. "Maybe."

She stayed silent and we stared each other down like two kids having a contest.

"I'm waiting," she finally prompted.

"For me to kiss you?" I asked presumptuously, making her giggle. "Because that's a little difficult with you all the way on the other side of the table. But I'll give it a shot if you want.

I cleared away the empty shot glasses between us, like I was going to sprawl myself right across this table.

"For you to tell me your deal," she corrected.

I pounded the table with my fist. "Damn. We don't have our drinks yet. That's one extra sip for you."

When she didn't' respond, I added, "Why don't you tell me what you think my deal is."

"Oh, I already know."

I feigned surprise. "You do?"

She nodded. "I do."

The waitress delivered our drinks and I took a sip of mine, prompting Lia to take an obligatory swallow of her own. She did.

I sat back. "Okay, let's hear it."

"You're a bartender," she began.

I pursed my lips in mock appreciation. "Oooh, perceptive. I like that in a woman."

She ignored my jab and continued. "You do it because you like the attention."

"What attention?" I asked. "You ignore me all night."

"From other women. I see the way they look at you. You could have any girl in this room."

I leaned forward, holding her gaze. "But I'm here with you."
