When a girl at her night job disappears, she dives into Scooby mode. She might be able to handle a missing waitress on her own, but when a new Shadow moves in next door and turns her into a blushing, flirting, love-crazed girl, her need for answers unearths nightmares from her past and monsters of the here and now. It's possible her bad attitude might not be enough to carry her through.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 5 / 5

What if everyone on Earth was already dead? When I skimmed over the synopsis for This Morning I Woke Up Dead, I stopped at the second paragraph and knew I HAD to read this. The plot was so original and fresh sounding - I couldn't imagine how this was going to work, but I was intrigued. Needless to say, I was not disappointed!

We're introduced to Hadley and Dominic and get to know them and, through flashbacks, what their relationship had been like before Hadley's car accident. Mindy Larson has created an organic and believable relationship that made you ache for both of them to be together again. I really felt like I knew them and was right there with them.

Once Hadley is given permission to contact Dominic, I had high hopes that he would realize he's already dead, too, so he could be with Hadley again. I worried that his intelligence would work against him, however, because he rationalized the inexplicable over and over again. Yet he also seemed open to possibilities he had never thought of before - he believed Hadley was visiting him every time he felt her icy touch. Only a quarter of the way in, I wanted him to come to the correct conclusion so he could be reunited with Hadley.

This Morning I Woke Up Dead goes beyond Hadley and Dominic's love story. It made me think about life and death - what does it mean to be alive? Is there life after death and what is there before birth? I laughed and cried right along with the characters in trying to figure all of this out. The ending was so surprising - I never saw it coming in a million years. It was heartrending and uplifting at the same time - I don't know how Mindy Larson managed to make it both, but she did.

I haven't been this touched by a book in such a serious way in a long time. I've been looking for a book that would make me feel the way this book has done. This is a book that once read, no matter how long it's been or how many books you've read in the meantime, you'll remember everything about it just by glancing at the title. This Morning I Woke Up Dead has that kind of staying power. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Title: Soul Ties (Soul Ties #1)

Publication date: July 22nd 2013
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

Blog Tour organized by: Limitless Publishing

~ Synopsis ~

On an English university campus, Ava is hunting Keir. She needs his Nephilim soul to trade for her freedom.

But Ava didn't expect to find terrible secrets about the fate of the souls she takes. Or fall in love.

Soul-hunter Ava has retrieved hundreds of souls from demons but has never been assigned the dangerous mission for a Nephilim soul. When she arrives on campus and meets Keir, she discovers he has secrets more valuable than his Nephilim soul - secrets she could trade for the life she wants. She also meets Dahlia, the human girl with an inexplicable hold over Keir, and secrets of her own.

When she uncovers the true fate of the souls she takes back to her superiors, and what Keir is doing to try and prevent it, Ava's world is turned upside down.

Forced into a battle where the lines between good and evil are blurred, Ava is faced with the choice between saving herself by betraying those around her, or helping Keir and risking her life.

Ava's ultimate choice: retrieve Keir's soul and live, or join his battle and risk going to Hell.

Warning: This book contains graphic language

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 4 /5

Soul Ties captured me immediately with its synopsis and the girl with pink hair on the cover. I love pink hair! This book did not disappoint - everything it promised, it delivered. The world as Ava knew it is ripped out from under her, and she begins to wonder if she really ever knew anything about her job at all. I wanted to know why and how she made the decision to become a soul-hunter when she was a teenager, especially after she was warned about all of the problems she could face with that single decision.

Dahlia is a mystery, and I couldn't help but feel Ava needed to be friendlier to her. She has a very surprising past and is linked to Keir in that past in surprising ways. Dahlia and Keir's relationship makes more sense once you find out what they've been through together. Dahlia didn't start out as a character I liked very much, but I began to like her the more I got to know her.

Keir is the perfect match for Ava in my opinion. As much as Ava tries to give the impression she's a tough and ruthless soul-hunter, Keir saw through her facade the moment they met. She's actually incredibly vulnerable and seemed at times to be close to letting that vulnerability slip through. The chemistry between Keir and Ava sizzled, and he turns her world upside down with the revelations about what really happens to the souls Ava collects and turns in. I thought the twist was pure genius.

I kept rooting for Ava to choose to fight alongside Keir rather than collect his soul. I understood her indecision though - her relationship with Keir is fraught with tension because neither can fully trust the other. She had to make a choice with the risk of Keir lying to her to save his soul from being collected, so it made sense that she would proceed with caution. She can't just believe him right off the bat when she was sent there to kill him for his soul. I did wish that Ava had been a stronger female character. I liked that she had vulnerability, but she seemed a little weak to me at times that didn't have anything to do with feeling vulnerable.

If you're looking for something different from vampires and werewolves in the paranormal department, Soul Ties is an excellent book for you to read. I love this book and can't wait for the next installment!

Blog Tour ~ Review & Giveaway: Dead and Missing by Chris Myers

Welcome to my stop on the Dead and Missing Tour hosted by AToMR Tours
Please click here to follow along with the tour.

Title: Date with the Dead
Author: Chris Myers
Publication date: March 19th 2013
Genre: Paranormal Mystery / Romance
Age Group: Young Adult
Tour organized by: AToMR Tours
Source: Copy for Review
My rating: 4 / 5 stars

~Synopsis~
Sixteen-year-old Jolie Livingston's closest and only friend Drew is this really hot dead guy, and it bites that the self-absorbed princesses at school cannot even see him. That's right she can communicate with the dead. It's the living she has trouble with. She and her mom inherited this awesome crib in Plymouth, MA. It's quite a step-up from the homeless shelter in New Orleans, but there's a catch. They can't afford the past due mortgage, so Jolie's working on that. She starts a ghost hunting business called Ripsters. Somehow she's managed to recruit Brittany, a glamour SAP smothered in pink, and a techie allergic to ghosts. Brit actually thinks he resembles the R&B singer Chris Brown. All that pink has clouded her vision. They both have special talents Jolie's hoping will be useful to their venture. Right now, they're working for a family in need of major therapy due to a dead guy with a hole in his head.

~My Thoughts~
Usually I'm not drawn to mysteries, but the premise of a supernatural themed mystery had me intrigued. I love a good ghost story and hunting ghosts is even better. I must admit, I'm jealous of the abilities of Jolie and her mom. I'd love to be able to help spirits cross over and give families closure. Jolie and her mom come from a line of women in their family who all have the ability to see and speak to the dead or be a medium through which a spirit can communicate with the living. How cool would that be to inherit that kind of ability?

I loved the characters, especially when they're together. From appearances alone, Jolie, Reese, Brittany, and Drew don't seem like they would be friends, but the supernatural brings them together. Somewhere along the way, they realize they have become friends who depend on one another. I connected with Jolie right away - the way she thinks and the style of clothes she wears plus her background is so interesting and made me want to know more about her. The author gives a few hints of some of the work with ghosts Jolie did when she lived in New Orleans.

The ghost hunting expeditions, the seances, and the mystery surrounding it all was so much fun to read! I couldn't get enough. Jolie is braver than most people would be when it comes to the spirit world - I know that though I'd love to have her abilities, I'm not so sure I'd be as brave as she was, especially when the ghost with the hole in his head turns menacing.

Overall, this is a light read that you'll fly through, pun intended. I relished every minute of it with all of the twists and turns. The author did a fantastic job of keeping me on my toes and guessing the identity of the murderer. I'm so excited for the sequel!
