Humanity teeters on the brink of extinction...

Vanguard Lindsay Rooney has faced the undead hordes of Inferi Scourge and lived to tell the tale, but she has also suffered horrible losses. Like millions of other civilians, she had hoped that The Bastion would recover after a team of modified soldiers eradicated the undead hordes of Inferi Scourge that infested their valley. Yet the city still crumbles around them, along with any chance of survival.

Lindsey's growing friendship with Torran MacDonald, an officer with the Science Warfare division, is her only solace as the decline of the city continues. When food riots fill the streets, martial law is enacted, and the upper echelons of government battle for control of the city, Lindsey is conscripted by her superiors to embark on a dangerous mission into the dead world beyond The Bastion. To add even more complications, Torran and the SWD join the squad.

Soon, Lindsey realizes that her mission is more than what it seems, and there are secrets that could destroy The Bastion and take her life.

The Last Mission of the Living

By

Rhiannon Frater

Lindsey awoke with a start. It took her a second to comprehend it was her wristlet vibrating that had awakened her. Activating the screen, she saw the message was incoming from her secret program. Instantly, her heart started to beat wildly with excitement. Still a little tipsy from the tequila, she edged out from beneath Torran's long leg and arm and scooted to the ladder.

Once on the main floor, she sat at her computer array beneath the elevated bed, and she logged into the program. After several long, excruciating seconds, the message downloaded. It was from Maria. Gnawing on her bottom lip, Lindsey quickly scrolled through it. The message was short, but worrying.

Lindsey, Dwayne and I need to talk to you and Commandant Pierce ASAP. Call tomorrow at exactly 1600 hours.

Realizing she needed to be careful with how many times she contacted Maria, Lindsey hesitated, weighing whether or not she should respond or just wait until the designated time. Finally, she typed in a short note signaling she'd received the message and logged out of the program. Gnawing on her thumbnail, she stared at the screens. She wanted to hack into the SWD and government sites and search out information on the new Legatus, but didn't dare do it while Torran was around.

"You look worried."

Lindsey gazed upward to see Torran peering at her over the rail of her bed.

"I'm always worried in the back of my mind." With a sheepish smile, she shrugged slightly. "Well, not worried exactly. I've always got some fixation back in the gray matter."

"Sort of like you got a computer program running in the back of your mind sorting things out?" Torran ventured.

Surprised that he got it so right, Lindsey gazed at him in awe.

"You get a look in your eyes. Like you're processing something." Torran slipped over the side of the bed and dropped down. "Considering your very nice computer display, I'm going to guess that you're good at working with them, too."

"My father was a programmer. He taught me everything I know."

"But you had the natural talent, too, huh?"

"You can say that." Lindsey uneasily shifted her weight on her chair, not willing to let Torran too far into her personal headspace.

"But you're a grunt. Not a programmer."

Lindsey swiveled toward him and shrugged. "I wanted to do something different. I didn't want to follow in someone else's footsteps but make my own path."

With a slight nod, Torran rested his hands on the edge of her bed and stretched. It was very provocative and she was distracted by the muscles shifting beneath his skin. She wanted to be distracted. Fear was a tight knot in her gut.

"And you don't want to talk about it."

"Nope."

"Is this where we draw lines?" Torran asked, tilting his head.

"Yep." Lindsey slid to her feet and ran her hands down his chest. "We're getting to know each other. We're getting to be friends. But not only did I lose the stupid ex, but my best friend. I need a new friend."

"A friend with benefits." Torran stared into her eyes somberly. "I'm there with you."

"Are you?" Lindsey really hoped he was, because she liked him.

"This life is too uncertain," he said at last. "Better to keep things simple. Uncomplicated."

"Let's enjoy the rest of the night before we have to go back to the real world." Lindsey rubbed her lips against his chin softly.

Torran cupped her face and kissed her lightly. "I better go."

"Torran..."

"No, Lindsey. I should. You see, if I stay any longer I won't want to go back to the real world."

Frowning, she feared she'd made a misstep with him.

"The thing is this...you're a great girl. And I think we're going to be great friends. But we need boundaries. Sleeping here tonight...a little too much over the line."

"So don't sleep." Lindsey gave him the beguiling look that seemed to affect him so much.

"Oh, that's playing so dirty." Torran laughed.

"One more time, then you can go home." Lindsey turned up her flirty look, her fingers lightly touching his lip.

"Fine. But...boundaries."

"Right."

His kiss rendered her breathless.

Synopsis

Best friends since kindergarten, Adam and Christy have always been the perpetual outsiders in their small town in Texas. The other kids call Adam gay and Christy a witch.

On both counts the bullies are right.

Their junior year in high school seems destined to be the same old same old until Christy decides to cast a love spell for Adam at the midnight hour. The next day an alluring and mysterious boy enrolls at school and sets hearts aflutter, including Adam's. Meanwhile, Christy's mad crush on the handsome football player Ian seems to be going nowhere fast and her witch puberty is making her life miserable.

When a great evil arrives in town that threatens everything they hold dear, the best friends realize that finding a boyfriend is the least of their worries. Soon Adam and Christy will have to battle a force of darkness that has killed in their town before, and will again.

Christy and Adam are the perfect pair of best friends in The Midnight Spell. Christy is wildly dramatic, fun loving, and a fiercely loyal friend. I loved her to pieces! I could see myself being friends with her and would want her in my corner any day. Adam is more mellow, contemplative, and the calm to Christy's storm. He's level headed and fiercely loyal to her. While she believes in magic with every reason to do so (she really is a witch), he doesn't, yet they're best friends anyway. They respect each other's beliefs, and their personalities complement each other.

I adored Christy and Adam's parents. Christy's parents have been married for ages but are still as in love as though they're teenagers. I loved them! Adam's mom is supportive of her son being gay, so that's a non-issue in this story. I loved her! These parents listen to their kids, and the lack of family drama was a nice change of pace. I found myself jealous at times that Christy's parents seem to understand her so well. I think she takes them for granted sometimes, but no matter what, teenagers are going to feel embarrassed by their parents.

What was an issue with Adam being gay was the lack of safety around his classmates. He's been beat up before back in sixth grade, and I think the anxiety that it could happen again was always on his mind. He only wants to find love, which seems impossible being the only gay guy in a small and close-minded town.

The sudden appearance of the new girl, Olivia, seemed almost too good to be true. Some might say she's abrasive while others might say she just speaks her mind. She fits right into the group as if she has always been there.

Mark is the new boy at school and arrives the morning after the spell Christy casts. It seems too good to be true for Adam. Mark and Olivia were both mysterious and I kept looking for clues as to who or what the evil was that came to town. I couldn't decide if it would be most obvious or least obvious, and I liked that I couldn't decide.

The tone of the book, though evil comes to town, was lighter than I was expecting, and I was happy with it. I thought from the synopsis it would have be serious and dark, but there were a lot of happy moments and times I laughed out loud. I loved the writing, the characters, the dual narrative split between Christy and Adam, and their friendship. I highly recommend The Midnight Spell to anyone looking for a young adult paranormal novel - this will grab your attention from the beginning until the end.

~Synopsis~

Amaliya Vezorak always believed she was destined to live a failed life in obscurity until she was brutally murdered by an ancient vampire named The Summoner and reborn as a powerful vampire necromancer. Now it is up to her to save the world...

~My Thoughts~

It's all come down to this - the final showdown between Amaliya and those who stand with her and The Summoner. The Summoner's plans in light of what he's been wanting for the last hundred years are revealed, and it's even more diabolical than anyone could have imagined.

This was such an intense ride! I couldn't believe it. With each book, the plot has unfolded more and more deeply, and I loved where I found myself while reading this installment. Just when I thought The Summoner was as evil as a being could get, Rhiannon Frater showed me he still had a few more tricks up his sleeve. Believe me when I say though that he's one of the most vile villains I've read about. Just thinking about him and his plans gives me the chills.

I'm in love with Amaliya, completely and totally. She's incredibly resourceful, intelligent, and just all out bad ass. The transformation she's undergone from the first book to the second book to this one is stunning.  I 'think she's adjusted so well to becoming a vampire because she never wanted to live an ordinary life. She didn't have that in her. She's seemed to have gone from a human girl with no confidence in herself who was sorely mistreated with the exception of her grandmother, cousin Sergio, and childhood friend, Pete to a powerful "necrovamp" who's brave and willing to fight to save the world. The fate of billions of lives are in the hands of her and her allies. If they fail, the consequences will be dire. I wouldn't want that responsibility weighing on me!

It's funny how some of the characters that I didn't like in the first book have now grown on me, such as Samantha. She loves Buffy - who could hate a girl who not only loves Buffy but wishes she WAS Buffy? Haven't all of us at some time or another wished we were Buffy? I know I have. ;) There were also a couple of characters whom I felt more neutral about but still didn't trust. Rachon was definitely one of those characters. I really loved the pop culture references to Buffy, Twilight, and Anne Rice's Lestat. The Twilight jokes made me laugh out loud. And I got some weird looks when that happened.

Rhiannon Frater did an amazing job drawing me into Amaliya's world, and I'm better for knowing her and the motley crew she hangs around. This book was action packed and such a roller coaster ride where I had no idea what was going to happen next and who was going to live or die. I never would've guessed the ending, but I'm happy with it. Rhiannon Frater did justice to her characters and with her readers who have invested themselves in Amaliya's world, an incredibly difficult balance to achieve.

~ Synopsis ~
Death has claimed a Socoli, but the family curse will not allow him to stay dead. Vanora and Alisha must battle the creature that stole their brother's life while fearing the possible resurrection of Roman.

In Darkness We Must Abide is the epic saga of one young woman caught in the dangerous world of the creatures of the night.

~ My Thoughts ~
The story of Vanora, Alisha, and Roman continues with Alisha and Roman vowing to keep their family intact and to keep their lives as normal as possible. I liked Roman more this time around than I did in the first episode. I understand him better and love his role as the protective older brother. He obviously loves and cares for his sisters and is more fatherly towards them than brotherly, which he is to fill that void in their lives.

Vanora is a strong character. I think the love from her siblings and the stable family life they've given her over the years contribute to her ability to not let not other kids bother her with their teasing her over her albinism. She's confident and intelligent, and I just really love her! Her name is unique - I haven't read a book with a character with her name, and I think it's beautiful and fits her very well.

I'd love for life to remain the same for the three siblings, but I have a feeling this isn't going to be as easy as Roman thinks it will be. It may not even be possible. What is he going to do when Vanora turns eighteen? He has built his entire life around her. What if she decides to go away to college? These are all questions I'm excited to explore as the story develops.

~ Synopsis ~
A mysterious new vampire appears in the life of the Socolis. Is he friend or foe?

In Darkness We Must Abide is the epic saga of one young woman caught in the dangerous world of the creatures of the night.

~ My Thoughts ~

Armando attempts to grow closer to Vanora, which set off warning bells for me. What are his intentions? Can he be trusted, or does he have some sort of sinister plans for Vanora and her family? He's suave and an old world gentleman, but there's something underneath the surface that I don't trust even though I like his character. There's a chemistry between the two of them that is undeniable and interesting because it isn't just as simple as a crust - there's much more to it.

Vanora begins to grow apart from Alisha and Roman, which really saddened me, but it's an honest and realistic view into someone her age. She's a teenager becoming a young adult and developing her own identity. Already she's mature and intelligent beyond her years. Not only is she growing apart from them as any normal teenager might, but there's also the huge obstacle of Alisha and Roman being vampires while Vanora is not. Alisha and Roman really are more like parents to her than siblings, and the interactions between them remind me of a teenager vs. her parents situation, which led to some comical moments.

I really love that about these episodes - there are serious moments, funny moments, tense moments, and sad moments all which make for a story that seems to jump off the pages. The writing is stellar, the characters are ones I care about, and the plot reels me in right away. I'm looking forward to the rest of this season, and luckily, I have episode four waiting for me!

Book Review ~ Death Comes Home (In Darkness We Must Abide Episode #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Death Comes Home (In Darkness We Must Abide, #1)
Title: Death Comes Home (In Darkness We Must Abide #1)
Author: Rhiannon Frater
Published: March 6, 2013
Pages: 38
Genre: New Adult Modern Gothic Horror
My Rating: 5 / 5

~ Synopsis ~
In Darkness We Must Abide is the epic saga of one young woman caught in the dangerous world of the creatures of the night.

Already living in the shadows due to her albinism, Vanora is just a little girl when her older brother inadvertently unleashes a terrible evil from the family crypt that changes their lives forever.

As she grows up in a world where beautiful deadly beings hunt by night, one captures her eye and her heart. Yet, can she trust the mysterious Armando? For there is a powerful entity plotting to claim her when she reaches adulthood in order to fulfill an ancient prophecy, and her enemy has enveloped her in a web of deceit, casting doubt on all she believes to be true. Soon, she will have to fight not only to save those she loves, but also for her very soul.

Rhiannon Frater delivers a chilling adventure once again with this multi-part epic serial with a dynamic cast, old school vampires, bloody action, a smoldering forbidden love, and a terrifying villain set against the backdrop of a modern day vampire war.

Each episode will be between 10,000 and 20,000 words with new installments being published every 2 to 3 weeks.

Episode 1: Death Comes Home
Roman Socoli inadvertently releases a terrible evil when he has his Romanian ancestors entombed on his estate in Houston, Texas.

~ My Thoughts ~
Vampires haven't been done this right since Anne Rice. Ethereal, dark, foreboding... I couldn't get enough! With this beginning to the series, I know great things are yet to come. The characters are fantastic and vivid, and their story is spellbinding and had me shivering. Before In Darkness We Must Abide, I hadn't yet read any of Rhiannon Frater's novels but had planned on it. Needless to say, I'll be devouring every piece of her writing from now on!

Similar to shouting out help I feel while watching a horror movie, I wanted to jump in there with the Socolis several times and advise the characters not to look out the window, not to open the door, or not to go downstairs for fear of what might be there lurking in the shadows. I must admit there were a couple of moments when I wanted to hide under the covers! This isn't to say these aren't intelligent characters, however, because they very much are.

I really appreciate the unconventional family structure - the two older siblings raising their younger sister. And that's just a small part of what makes this family so interesting and anything but the typical family. I mean, how cool is it that they have Romanian ancestors? Unfortunately for them, that's exactly what unleashes the nightmare they must face.

*Note: The below Q & A session was provided by Xpresso Book Tours.*

In Darkness We Must Abide

Q & A

Q: In Darkness We Must Abide is a supernatural serial. What exactly does that mean? What is a serial?
A: It means I’m crazy and just had to put more on my writing plate! Okay, in all honesty, In Darkness We Must Abide is sort of like a television show I’m writing for your brain. A serial used to be a very popular form of literature. It was an ongoing episodic form of storytelling much like popular television shows today. Each part builds on the one before it, creating a very rich story for the readers to enjoy. Serials followed pretty regular schedules for their installments (weekly, biweekly, monthly).

Q: So what genre is In Darkness We Must Abide?
A: In Darkness We Must Abide is gothic horror set in modern times. It has all the classic gothic horror trappings like a big, gloomy mansion, the deep dark secrets, the tormented lovers, and terrifying monsters. It's an epic tale about a young woman who is caught up in the supernatural world of vampires, werewolves, witches, and ancient prophecies.

Q: This story is a bit different from most of your books though, right?
A: Though it's still a character-driven tale of horror, and has some truly scary moments, at its heart it is a very tragic sort of love affair between two people who are drawn to each other even though their worlds are tearing them apart. Upon reflection, I can definitely see how my love of Jane Eyre and other gothic romances influenced the central relationship. Armando and Vanora are wounded people that you want desperately to somehow be together, but you're just not sure if/when/how it might happen.

Q: We only see bits of Armando in the prologues of the first two episodes before he appears as a central figure in episode three. He instantly became very popular in the first season. Why do you think that is?
A: Well, he's delicious! LOL. Armando is not only very handsome and charming, he's very complicated. He's a man of many secrets and conflicting emotions. Though he's an older vampire (400 years old), he's eternally 22 years old and has a youthful spark to him. He's a bit sarcastic, naughty, and playful despite the fact that he's not all that he seems to be. Armando doesn't come across as cruel, so I think that adds to his appeal. Yet at the same time, he's dangerous in that he can totally break Vanora's heart and possibly betray her to his Master.

Q: Tell us a bit about Vanora, the heroine of the story.
A: Well, we start our journey with her when she's ten years old and her life is altered forever when her brother has his ancestors from Romania transferred to the mausoleum on their estate in Houston, Texas. Immediately, a chain of events starts that sends her plunging into a very dark world. That being said, not all is bleak, because she has a much older brother and sister who take care of her and love her. They're a very strong family unit. As season one continues, we see Vanora grow up to be a charming seventeen-year-old on the verge of her adulthood. Of course, that's about the time when things between her and Armando start to significantly change.

Q: Vanora is an albino. How does that affect her life?
A: Vanora's albinism affects her life quite a bit. She can't be out in direct sunlight, she's legally blind (though her sixth sense powers allow her to "see"), her appearance draws unwanted comments and negative attention, and isolates her a bit from others as she's growing up. That being said, the difficulties she has to overcome make her a formidable person. She doesn't feel sorry for herself, though she may not be entirely confident at times.

Q: We finally got a good look at the villain at the end of episode 5, the first season finale. He's an albino, too, and quite imposing. Will he take on a bigger role in Season 2?
A: Armando's Master is definitely the villain of the story. In Season 2 we learn a whole lot about him and what exactly he's up to. We also learn why he's so fixated on Vanora and why he sent Armando to watch over her. That Vanora and the villain are both albinos is significant.

Q: What can we expect in Season 2 that starts June 7, 2013?
A: Well, the intensity of Episode 5, the season finale, is amplified. It becomes very, very intense and all the characters are in considerable danger. Of course, Armando and Vanora continue to be at the center of the storm. By the end of Season 2 the readers will definitely know where Armando stands and what exactly Vanora must battle against.
