Title: Invoking Nonna
Author: Sage Adderley
Series: Triple Goddess (Book One)
Genre: YA, Paranormal
Paperback: 186 pages
Publisher: Sweet Candy Press
1ST edition (December 20th 2013)
ISBN-10: 0989709825
ISBN-13: 978-0989709828

Synopsis:

Maggie Sloan is a free-spirited teenager growing up in rural Georgia. Unlike her peers, Maggie is a witch and so is her mother. In addition to normal teenager rites of passage, she must learn about her family lineage and witchcraft. Her mother, Laura, keeps a tight lid on their family secrets - like the mysterious life and death of her grandmother who passed away before Maggie was born.

Practicing the craft will test solid friendships and introduce Maggie to new realms. While seeking the truth about herself and her family, Maggie is faced with danger from churchgoing classmates who will stop at nothing to make sure she is found out. Laura and Maggie strengthen their bond through witchcraft and work together to overcome their enemies. Are their magical gifts enough to keep them safe?

My Thoughts:

INVOKING NONNA is a tale of a young girl named Maggie who begins searching for answers regarding her family history and who she is. Told from multiple POV, the story is mostly from Maggie's point-of-view and explores the issues with which she comes face to face - finding out who she really is and her family roots, handling the different reactions to her beliefs, and building the relationship she wants with her mother.

Maggie and her mom, Laura, have an unusual mother-daughter relationship - they're both witches but don't acknowledge it to each other. In the beginning I had a hard time understanding their relationship. They aren't close though Maggie desperately wants to be and seem to rarely interact. They definitely never talk about family - Maggie knows next to nothing about her roots, but once she's assigned to do a genealogy project for her history class, everything changes.

Not only does Maggie begin to find out more about her family, but Laura also recognizes her daughter wants to learn the craft and begins practicing openly and teaching her. The more Maggie learns, the more complicated her life becomes. As if being a teenager wasn't already complicated enough! But she handles it better than I would have because she's resilient and unafraid.

There's a great mix of heavy emotions as well as lightness and fun to balance out the heaviness. Ruby was a character who added humor to the story, and I adored Maggie and Ruby's friendship. They reminded me of my friendships in high school. Everyone needs a Ruby in her/his life! INVOKING NONNA is a story I loved every moment and found myself wishing the story had been a bit longer as I'm anxiously waiting for the next book!

My Rating: 5 / 5

Add: Goodreads

Excerpt:

"The scroll chose you. For whatever reason, she's your reap."
"Well, that sucks." Leila chewed her bottom lip. "If I don't do it?"
Edon hesitated before he said, "Her soul will rot inside her body. Do you have any idea what that's like? She'll be a living corpse, a shell of a person. She won't feel anything including love. We as reapers, the undead, feel more than she ever will alive."
Leila swallowed the lump in her throat. "How do you know that?"
"Because I've seen what it does to a person," Edon said. "That little girl deserves better."

Blitz: Giveaway & Author Interview! ~ The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair

The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair
Publication date: January 17th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Katie wants to invest her heart and soul in love, but she may lose both to Hell.

Katie, a senior in high school, is torn between loving the "good" guy, her childhood friend Wes who makes promises he doesn't keep and abandons her when she needs him the most, and the "bad" guy, the new kid at school Josh who is also a real demon from Hell. Katie wants someone who pays attention to her and puts her first, but what is she willing to give up to find him?

~ Interview with the Author: Pembroke Sinclair ~

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

I started the story (Coming from Nowhere) in high school, and it was a competition between me and a few other girls on the swim team. Our teammates were supposed to be the judges, but no one finished their stories. I think I may have been the only one to revisit and rewrite it years later.

2. Writing can be a difficult job, what inspires you to keep going?

Compulsion. If I don't write, it makes me crabby. It's a stress release for me. Plus, the voices in my head get very insistent.

3. What are you working on now? What's next?

Currently, I am working on a nonfiction book about zombies. Next will be the sequel to THE APPEAL OF EVIL.

4. What's your writing process, schedule, or routine?

I squeeze it in whenever I can. With a full-time job and a family, time is a luxury I don't have, but I try to write whenever I find a spare moment.

5. Who is your favorite book character of all time? Why?

If you're talking about a book I wrote, it would have to be Krista from my undead books (LIFE AFTER THE UNDEAD and DEATH TO THE UNDEAD). She is tough and witty, yet still full of issues.

If you're talking about a book I've read, I can't really say. Over the years, so many characters have intrigued me, and not one of them really stands out in my mind.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Be persistent and patient. Publishing is a rough world filled with "Nos." But it only takes one yes to make everything all right!

7. What's your favorite quote?

"Do. Or do not. There is no try." From the wise and wonderful Yoda. It can be applied to any aspect of life, and it's very true.

8. Who would you most like to have a cup of coffee with? (Dead or alive) Explain...

The person who is going to make sure my books are seen by everyone in the world. I'm sure we'll need to come up with a marketing plan.

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?

When people don't respond to emails. That drives me insane! Especially if it's the only way you have to communicate with them.

10. Tell us something quirky about you.

Orange pop is my weakness.

11. Favorite comfort food?

Anything with cinnamon and no nuts in it.

12. Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Wars, although I enjoy Star Trek too.

13. Sunrises or Sunsets?

Both.

~ Author Links ~

I love the sound of this book! The bad boy is a demon from hell? And the protagonist, Katie, is trying NOT to fall in love with him? Count me in! Plus, the good guy, Wes, doesn't sound all that good to me. Making promises he doesn't keep? Abandoning Katie when she needs him the most? I want to find out how that makes him a good guy, lol. Almost sounds like the demon is my choice, except for, you know, all that possibly losing your heart and soul to Hell.

I also loved the interview with the author. Her favorite quote from Yoda is awesome, and I agree it can be applied to life in general.

Blog Tour: Review ~ Silent Echo: A Siren's Tale by Elisa Freilich

Hey guys! Welcome to my stop on the Silent Echo: A Siren's Tale Blog Tour hosted by Girls Heart Books Tours
Click here for the full tour schedule and to follow along. :D

Title: Silent Echo: A Siren's Tale

Series: Silent Echo Trilogy #1

Author: Elisa Freilich

Publication date: September 2013

Publisher: Diversion Books

Genre: YA Fantasy / Paranormal

Source: Review copy

~ Synopsis ~

Silence was Portia Griffin's nemesis. In a world where teens never cease to speak their minds, the sixteen-year-old Portia, rendered mysteriously mute at birth, has opted out of the mainstream conversation. Instead, this silent sophomore at Ridgewood Preparatory Academy finds solace in her keen love of music and bizarre obsession with birds. And it doesn't hurt that her best friend, Felix Fein, deaf at the age of eight, couldn't care less whether or not she is able to execute the spoken word.

But Portia's world is about to change - and not necessarily for the better. After sixteen silent years, Portia is suddenly gifted with a voice unparalleled in its purity and powers. Her new ability to persuade, to seduce and to destroy with her voice alone sends Portia on a search for answers she never imagined she'd have to accept.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 4 / 5

In Silent Echo: A Siren's Tale, a teenage girl named Portia who is mute is best friends with a teenage boy named Felix who is deaf. I adore Portia's name and thought their friendship was so cool - they fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I found it really refreshing to see a teenage girl and a teenage boy such a close relationship without romance being involved. It was quickly apparent that Felix has a crush on Portia, which worried me because I could tell she doesn't reciprocate those feelings.

She instead falls for a new student named Max almost instantly from the moment she sees him. I loved Max from the beginning of the book to the end. He's sincerely romantic and musically talented, plus the fact that he's attractive doesn't hurt. One night he even sang Portia a lullaby when she confided to him she's had trouble sleeping due to being plagued by bad dreams! What more could you want from a love interest?

Though I knew from the synopsis that Portia regains her voice, I wasn't prepared for how awful she became. At first, she was concerned with Felix's feelings, worried he would feel like she was leaving him behind now that she no longer had her disability. She thought more about his feelings than her own. The next thing I know, she's switching wildly from her usual personality to someone who treats others horribly, and I didn't recognize her anymore. I definitely didn't like her much anymore. At the same time, I knew she was trying to fight the influence trying to take over her body, and that was the only thing about her I found redeeming.

The ending was as intense as I thought it would be with so much build-up for it. There's so much to take in, so much happens, that if there hadn't been an epic battle at the end, then it all would have been for naught. Luckily that wasn't the case. I love Greek mythology, and this story takes the mythology of the Sirens in a young adult setting and gives you something new and fresh that made for a great story.

~ About the Author: Elisa Freilich

Elisa Freilich has enjoyed a love affair with language from her earliest days. Raised in rural Monsey, New York, Elisa spent her days reading whatever crossed her path and developing a keen appreciation for the ever present music in her home - from classical to rock. French lessons and creative writing workshops complemented her adolescence, which was also greatly enhanced by a summer spent abroad at Cambridge University. From the time she could read and write, Elisa could often be found composing poems, song lyrics and satirical newspapers.

After her college years at Boston University, Elisa continued her creative pursuits, working as a junior VP of Marketing at a corporate graphic design agency and, later, as an interior decorator. Eventually, Elisa left the workforce to raise her family, in her now hometown of Englewood, NJ.

Throughout the years, Elisa has retained her devotion to all genres of books and music and was determined to synthesize her passions into one refreshing and original platform. The result is her debut novel, SILENT ECHO: A Siren's Tale, which will be published by Diversion Books in Summer 2013. With her own lyrical style, Elisa has created a world that young adults around the globe will find intensely gripping and refreshingly original.

When Elisa is not writing, her creative outlets still abound. She is fierce with a set of knitting needles, a hot glue gun and any ingredients that can somehow be fashioned into a sinful and highly caloric babka.
