Excerpt from Three to Tango

By Melanie Harlow

Secretly I'm a smut fiend, but only when it comes to books. Until last night, the only outwardly kinky thing about me was my hair on a rainy day. I'm a kindergarten teacher, for heaven's sake. I wear fuzzy slippers and granny panties. Ballet flats and sweater sets. I didn't even have sex until I was twenty-one, and then it was a lights-out, missionary-position, TV-blaring-to-cover-the-squeaky-dorm-room-bed kind of experience. (I still remember the rerun of How I Met Your Mother that was on, and let's just say that Marshall's description of the perfect burger was way more orgasmic than losing my virginity.)

Eventually I learned how to get myself off (in the total privacy of my shower, of course) and figured out what all the throbbing and moaning in my books was about, and I did manage to have two lovely little orgasms with Guy #2 last summer, but it took a lot of work. And time. So much time that I kept apologizing to the guy, and I couldn't relax. I mean, he stuck with it and all, but compared to the fast-building, toe-curling, earth-shattering, mind-blowing romps on my Kindle, my sex life was totally vanilla.

And then I took a tango lesson.

About the Authors Laurelin Paige, Gennifer Albin, Melanie Harlow, Sierra Simone, Kayti McGee Downey, and Tamara Mataya are the six authors who blog for TheNaturalAuthors.blogspot.com. Above all, they love reading smut, looking at pictures of hot men, and making up names for the band they’re always talking about forming.

Genre: New Adult Romance

Goodreads

Synopsis:
Ash Jensen, a squeaky-clean sophomore at the University of Tennessee, has a trail of baggage a mile long — she buried her fiancé only a year and a half ago. She swore she'd never love again but when she finds herself interned to a yummy Canadian conservation officer that promise is tested big-time. Kade Gyllenhahl sports wild tattoos, a rebellious attitude and a fohawk to die for. He's definitely the wrong man for her and she knows it.

Kade doesn't have time for a girl like her. She's a pretentious, unreadable princess who lives her life by her parents' rules. Kade knows nothing about her past and he'd prefer to keep it that way. Besides, he'll lose his job if he sleeps with Ash. Now if only he could get his mind off her. When the two of them end up alone and isolated on a routine field trip into the woods, things get a little complicated... One man afraid of commitment. One woman afraid to love again. Two lives. Two hearts. One life-changing journey.

 Excerpt:
"You like vodka?" Kade said.

"What?" I glanced at him uncertainly. "That's kind of an odd question. From way out in left field."

"You're half Russian." He was staring at me intensely. "You must like vodka."

"Oh, no." I returned his gaze with equal intensity. Had he felt that tingle when our hands touched, too? Our conversation was all innocent on the outside but I could sense the sexual tension seething on the inside. Neither of us broke eye contact. He wasn't sitting all that far from me. It wouldn't take much to close the gap and wrap my lips around his. "I had vodka once when I was in tenth grade. Almost threw up. Scotch is more my thing."

"Scotch? That's a man's drink."

I shrugged, but didn't break eye contact. "Not really."

"Any preferred brands?" His voice sounded deeper, more sexual. I was starting to lose myself in those eyes.

"I don't know." My voice sounded strange, too. A little breathy. "All kinds of brands. I don't like Jack Daniels, though."

"That's not even scotch. That's whiskey."

"Same thing." Kade stood up now and edged a little closer. His eyes never left mine. "How can you not like Jack Daniels? That's, like, a Tennessee institution. They make it there, don't they?"

"They do." My heart was beating fast. "But Collier and McKeel is more my thing."
"How do you know so much about all these drinks, anyway?" he said in that deep, slow voice. "The legal age is twenty-one in Tennessee."

I knew my eyes were broadcasting sheer want. He felt it. I'm sure he did, because his eyes fed that want right back at me. "I'm a delinquent."

"You are." He took another step closer. I could hear his breathing now. Deeper. Faster. "Collier and McKeel... remind me to let you try Seagram's 83 sometime. Canadians make the best whiskey. Perfect for a delinquent like you."

"I'm actually more of a wine person. At least I used to be." We were so close now, barely a hand-span away. Those green eyes never left mine, and consumed me.

"Wine? I can see that. I'd peg you as a fan of white. You speak Sauvignon Blanc?" The way he said those French words sounded so sexy.

"I speak champagne," I said huskily. "Dom Perignon makes the most amazing Cristal. White Gold is--" I choked off the words, feeling suddenly like I was drowning, and I turned away from Kade. I couldn't hold back the sudden tears.

After all this time, something so simple as the name of a drink still affected me. I almost hoped Kade would wrap his arms around me and carry me away from the horrors of the past and save me from the guilt, but when I looked at him I saw he'd retreated to the shade again. He was sitting on the log with his arms crossed, facing away from me, staring at the river.

Excerpt

"Did I really try to kiss you?"

He almost missed a step at the sudden change of topic. "We're back to that?"

"I thought I was with Niko," she said.

"I take it the experience wasn't pleasant? Nikolas can do that to people."

"It sounds like you hate him for some reason. Why?"

If it weren't for the real curiosity in her eyes, Balthazar wouldn't have answered her question. "We do things we're not proud of. Nikolas more than most."

"You know him."

A statement with more truth in it than anything he could say. Everyone knew Nickolas. a little too well for more than most. There lay the problem. Arianne knew Nikolas as the teenage high school boy. Balthazar knew Nikolas as the take no prisoners Reaper who occasionally did D's dirty work. Nikolas could have easily been third in the rankings, maybe even D's right hand, but he maintained his Reaper of Georgia status to keep under the radar for the side missions he would be given. It baffled Balthazar that Arianne didn't seem to know this about Nikolas.

"You're in love with him," he responded.

"Since I started high school."

Nikolas? Entertaining love? From a human, no less. "And how's that going for you?"

She folded her jeans and set them on the lounge chair. Taking one final deep breath, she pulled her top over her head, then set it neatly by her jeans.

Her gaze shifted to Cole, who was suddenly silent. She realized he was staring at her with a rather strange expression on his face. Had she somehow managed to shock the world-famous Cole Parker?

She didn't speak, but walked over to the stairs. His eyes followed her every move. He had yet to meet her gaze. He was honed in on her body. Something about that was empowering.

Liberating.

Although she had no experience with playing the temptress, the situation felt right to give it a try. Dark, seductive lighting...clear, warm water...a hot, transfixed male. Yeah, she was pretty sure the circumstances were right. She just didn't know if she had it in her.

She slowly descended the steps into the water. "So, Mr. Parker," she said in a casual tone, "what shall we do in this magnificent pool of yours?"

"Um..."

He didn't move as she walked from the shallow end to where he stood with the water lapping at his waist. She allowed her gaze to move over the hard muscles of his upper body as she approached. Even as she fully appreciated his fine physique with a woman's eye, she felt pride for helping him maintain it.

"The water feels wonderful," she said.

She walked to his side until the water reached her belly button, then came to a stop less than a foot from him. His gaze finally moved to hers. For the first time, she read stark desire in a male's gaze. Her pulse raced.

What in the world was she doing? Temptress? Yeah, right.

"Everly," he said.

His voice was low. Ragged. He closed the distance between them. Her nerves shimmied.

Oh, God. Was he going to kiss her? What should she do?

He paused. His eyes swept over her face. Whatever he read there had him backing up. Once again, she felt both relieved and disappointed.

Why was she so awkward with guys? With intimacy?

"You're not nearly wet enough," he said then.

Her mouth fell open. Then he grabbed her and leaped with her into the deep end. When they surfaced, she laughed and splashed him for dunking her. She realized the pool was filled with saltwater instead of chlorine as she pushed her hair out of her eyes.

"I'm totally getting you back for that," she said, fighting a smile.

The chase was on. He was a strong swimmer, but she was lighter and sleeker. When he would have powered his way across the pool to evade her, she zipped along beneath the surface and paced him. After several minutes of pursuing him, she cornered him near the waterfall that spilled in from a spa off the far side of the pool. They were both breathless and laughing like idiots.

"I think grabbing my swimsuit to drag me back was playing dirty," he said as he caught his breath.

"Sure it was. Serves you right."

"Remind me not to dunk you again unless I want to skinny dip."

She laughed again. His back was turned to her, the position in which she'd finally caught him. Only then did she register that her arms were still around his waist.

The feel of his body pressed against hers...his taut skin beneath her fingertips...it was--

"Tell you what," he said, turning around to face her. She didn't want to move her hands, and since he didn't try to escape her touch, she didn't. "That was too easy. I'll find you with my eyes closed."

"Oh, yeah? Marco Polo style?"

"Something like that. And when I do, I want a reward."

She could only echo him as she held his intent gaze. "A reward?"

"Yes, Ms. Wallace. I want a real kiss."

~ Excerpt Four ~

Madison falls silent and continues to look me over.

I take a deep breath and will her not to stop. See me, I think, see that I'm not worth all these tears and all this effort. See that I'm just some overgrown loser with no future and no plan for my life.

Only, her expression doesn't turn to disgust or enlightenment. She reaches up to stroke my cheek and I shut my eyes, unsure of what to say or do. I hear the rustle of her clothing as she leans in closer and feel her breath on my lips. I brace myself as she touches her mouth to mine, so gently that there's barely any contact. I sit still as stone, my hand gripping her shirt tighter and tighter. She holds the kiss until I feel her tremble, then she leans in and I taste her, the salt of movie theater popcorn and the barest hint of cherry lip gloss.

She's in my arms now. I kiss and kiss and kiss her, running my fingers down her spine and hearing her familiar gasp.

"She's clearly desperate," rings out one of the voices.

"Pathetic."

"She'll kiss anyone, you know?"

"He doesn't even know what he's doing."

I try to push them away, but this time, I have no control. They just laugh at my attempts.

"Alex." Madison touches my cheek. We've stopped kissing, though I don't know when.

"I'm sorry," I say. "I can't... we can't, okay?" There's enough adrenalin in my system to wake an elephant from a deep coma. I shake, and will the voices to be silent. They quiet down a little, but I don't have the control I did moments ago.

"Are you okay?" she asks.

I force my chest to expand and draw in the chill, humid air. I hold my breath while the air warms inside me, then expel it. "You should get inside," I say. "You'll miss the movie."

"You're okay?"

"Yeah," I lie. "Yeah, I'm good. Go on."

"I... I'm not going to leave you here."

I smooth my hair back, and, with a steadiness I don't feel, get to my feet. The cold from the sidewalk has soaked into my muscles, making me clumsy. We don't hold hands or even look at each other as we make our way back to the theater.
