Synopsis

Scientists are the new rock stars. The infection has been contained for nearly three months, and the world is celebrating. But humans are still dying. Rebekah Taylor has seen it firsthand. Her husband was killed right in front of her by the very creatures that humans were told they no longer had to fear.

Rebekah is determined to find out who is responsible for the death of her husband and the obvious cover-up. Fueled with revenge, she begins to find answers that lead to one frightening conclusion. The apocalypse might be over, but the battles are just beginning.

I've been excited to read RecruitZ for quite a while - the minute I first heard about it last December as a matter of fact. From the cover alone, I knew Rebekah would be a bad ass character, and while she didn't start out that way, she grew into the role. Right away I liked her and related with her feelings of loss. RecruitZ isn't a typical zombie novel - it's so much more than that with a conspiracy that's as disturbing as it is compelling.

In a post-apocalyptic world where zombies are supposed to no longer be a threat according to the government, Rebekah helplessly watches zombies tear her husband apart and believes his death was planned and covered up. Her friends don't believe her when she tells them what she saw, and I don't think they wanted to either.

Not only is she reeling from her husband's violent death, but she also must be careful not to reveal too much to the wrong person. She could be turned in and never heard from again, but she can't rest until she knows the truth and sets out to search for it. On the surface is denial and a glowing positivism about life after the outbreak while underneath, the dark and seedy side of humanity thrives. It's this dark, seedy side that Rebekah must explore to find out what's really going on and to avenge her husband's death.

RecruitZ is full of twists and turns I never expected, and I love it when a book keeps me in suspense. Rebekah is a character I love because she's strong yet also has her vulnerable side. She decides to take her grief and do something proactive with it, and I admire that about her. I'm looking forward to what comes her way in the next book.

Synopsis

Dezdamona Kabinosh is on a mission - a mission of love. And she traveled back in her own timeline to complete it. After being betrayed by her husband she's seeking a second chance at love, and Dez has come up with the perfect plan.

One problem though...Jaxson Kabinosh, her future husband, has also traveled back in time and he's determined to keep Dez for himself. Who will win the ultimate battle for Dez's heart? Jaxson, or her possible rebound guy?

Rewound hit me fast, and I couldn't get enough. I remember feeling disbelief when I saw I was halfway through the book already; I just didn't want it to end. The time travel aspect of the story drew me in, and the idea of going back in time for a do-over is completely appealing. I was even more satisfied with the story than I thought I could be. Rewound had me laughing, crying, and smiling, sometimes all at the same time!

Dez and Jax have been married longer than most people are alive. They love each other, and they have intense physical chemistry even after all of their years of marriage. I quickly became invested in their relationship even though from the synopsis I thought for sure I wouldn't like Jax. Surprise - I ended up loving him! Both of these characters are awesome yet have their flaws, too, which made them stand out as real people in my mind.

Their story flew by - I was that into my reading. Nothing could have interrupted me save for a tornado, and maybe not even then.  The shenanigans they got into were so funny and at times sweet, and it was all in the name of happiness. We all want to be happy. If you had a chance to travel back in time and make different choices in the hopes of finding happiness, would you do it? I would, not because I'm terribly unhappy with how my life has turned out, but I'd love to relive parts of my life knowing what I know now.

I think the biggest surprise for Dez is when she realizes Jax has followed her back in time. She thought it was going to be a simple task - all she had to do was go back in time to fall in love with another guy instead of Jax, and then Jax would never have the chance to hurt her. This was a snap decision she made thinking it would fix everything and that she'd get her happily ever after. But I don't think she thought about all of the things that could potentially go wrong, and that Jax has followed her leads to all kinds of complications.

Rewound is creative and addictive, and I didn't want it to end. Ever. The writing and characters will draw you in right away and won't let you go. I know I'll still be thinking about this book months from now. It's THAT good.

Series: The Evolution Series #1
Author: S.A. Huchton

Synopsis

Candace Bristol has always been obsessed with comic books, but in a world where the nightly news often mirrors these inked stories, her dreams of becoming a real superhero could actually come true. After being rescued by members of the government's AdvaNced Genetic EvoLution (ANGEL) Project four years ago, getting recruited for this elite team is all she's wanted.

Now 18, she's finally reached her goal after years of study and physical training, but little could have prepared her for life as a genetic experiment. As though coming to terms with her new ability to manipulate water isn't tough enough, she never expected to be swept off her feet by one of her fellow recruits.

With genetic alteration, the threat of physical and mental instability hangs over every superhero like a shadow. When one of their own tumbles over the edge of madness, Candace will have to choose between protecting the world, and saving the one who holds her heart.

What a crazy and heartbreaking ride! Evolution: ANGEL took me from the heights of euphoria to the depths of despair. My thoughts are still in a whirlwind. I had to decompress after finishing this book - so much happens but I also know so much has YET to happen. It's that intense of a read.

Candace is a firecracker. She's tough, goal driven, and becoming an ANGEL (AdvaNced Genetic EvoLution) is what she's wanted for the last four years - working and studying hard to get there. I really think she dreamed of becoming a superhero - even before she and her cousin were rescued by ANGELs - during all the years she's spent reading comics.

Adrian has to be every bookworm girl's dream. All he'd have to do for me is read out loud to me like he did for Candace, and I'd become putty in his hands. That's gotta be the sexiest thing I've read a guy doing. Plus, he's working in the library for the time being. AND Candace wins him over when she corrects her cousin's grammar, haha! What a man!

Jackson is the "bad boy" kind of superhero - there are a lot of layers to him that I didn't get to see in this first book and hope will be explored next time. Sparks fly between him and Candace - I could tell there was an attraction there that both worked very hard to deny.

That ending! I can't figure out if I dreamed it up or if it really happened. All I know is I couldn't breathe afterwards - I had to calm myself down just so I could sleep. I'm emotionally wrecked and desperate to find out what happens next. What to do in the meantime?!?

Blurb ~
The last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning she’s staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.

All at once she’s living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though he’s vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family – each claiming to be part of who she once was – a girl and a past somehow discarded.

Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesn’t know who to trust especially when Tommy’s lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and find her way home.

~Excerpt ~
“Where am I, exactly? I mean . . . what is this place?”

He smiled. “The Palace of Portici.”

“A palace?” I squinted, then flipped the hair off of my face. I was Ann Leigh, wasn’t I? Ann Leigh, strawberry blonde, five-foot-four, dreadfully allergic to cats. I grabbed the ends of my hair again and looked down at it. It wasn’t yellow-red at all but more like brown butter pecan. My head hummed. Martino was still grinning, as if he was more amused by me now that he was sure I wasn’t dead.

He spoke again. “Orto Botanico.”

“Botanical garden?”

“Si, yes. Ana, ora andiamo? La Pasticceria Tartoni?”

“Yes. We’ll go to the pastry shop now.” And I went with him. Even though, for all I knew, he could have been one of those freaks who got his jollies from attacking innocent young girls. But then, for all I knew, I wasn’t an innocent young girl.

The sky in Campania, Italy, looked familiar; the clouds were funny cotton ball shapes that could be giant sheep— pecore? If I were Ann Leigh from Nebraska, then how did I know those clouds, those words?

I'm excited for this book, and I'll tell you why. How freaky would it be to wake up on a different continent with eighteen months missing from your memory? You have no idea what's happened to you, who you are, and your memories of the time before are fragmented at best. What do you do? That's exactly what I want to find out about Ann - what is she going to do? Is she being lied to? So many possibilities!!

Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway ~ The Replacement by Rachael Wade

Hey guys! Welcome to my stop on THE REPLACEMENT blog tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. Click here for the full tour schedule. :D

Title: The Replacement
Author: Rachael Wade
Publication date: January 27th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult
Source: Review copy

Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis

*Contains sexually explicit content and mature subject matter, including language and elements of abuse.*

A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman's self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I'm twenty-three years old and I'm known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing - the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I'm not completely reckless. I'm safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone's girlfriend. I'm convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I'd go to in order to keep it that way.

My Review

My Rating: 5 / 5

I went into THE REPLACEMENT looking for an emotional read and was given so much more than I was expecting. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to find out more about Elise, this girl known as the town whore. And why is she so desperate to keep this reputation? What is she afraid of? Something must have happened to her, I reasoned, but when I was given glimpses into her childhood, I couldn't even have imagined what I'd find there. Her mom? Worst advice giver ever. Her dad? Well, let's just say I had to keep reminding myself during his scenes that this book doesn't take place in the 50's. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

THE REPLACEMENT emotionally affected me much more than I had anticipated. I had to stop and put the book down because I couldn't see to read through my tears. It was as if a dam inside me had broken. I cried for the girl Elise could have become had she been given loving parents and cried for the girl Elise had become - someone who believes she poisons people and doesn't deserve to be loved by anyone. The scenes from her childhood are absolutely heartbreaking.

I could identify with Elise's need to self destruct, and I think that's what broke open the floodgates for me. For completely different reasons, I know what it's like to want to destroy myself while everyone else watches helplessly. One of the people watching Elise self destruct? Jay. He's a much needed father figure for Elise - he cares about her and shows it unlike her own father. Scenes with him made me cry, too!

Ryder was amazing. I couldn't believe how he refused to give up on Elise no matter how much she tried to push him away. He didn't care about her past - he wanted a future with her. On the other hand, she felt she was broken and undeserving of that kind of future. One of my favorite scenes between Elise and Ryder was when they first kissed - she thought to herself that must be what a real kiss was like, and all this time she had been duped into thinking she'd been kissed before. That was a magical moment I was happy she experienced. Every girl needs a Ryder!

After finishing the book, I was emotionally exhausted, but it was worth it. Reading THE REPLACEMENT was cathartic for me - I've been needing a good cry, and this definitely brought it out of me. Elise's story will captivate you and bring out a wide range of emotions. You'll become so immersed in her story you won't even notice anything going on around you. And grab a box of tissues - you're gonna need them!

E.J. Wesley's Winter Thrills & Chills Blog Tour

Hey guys! Welcome to my stop on E.J. Wesley's Winter Thrills and Chills Tour for his Moonsongs Series. This tour is running January 6 - 17 and consists of reviews, interviews, top tens, guest posts and of course, giveaways! Be sure to check out the tour page for the full list of stops.

~Book 1  Blood Fugue~

"Some folks treated the past like an old friend. The memories warmed them with fondness for what was, and hope for what was to come. Not me. When I thought of long ago, my insides curdled, and I was left feeling sour and wasted."

Jenny Schmidt is a young woman with old heartaches. A small town Texas girl with big city attitude, she just doesn't fit in. Not that she has ever tried.

Life has pummeled her heart into one big, lonely callus. She has no siblings, both parents were dead by sixteen, and her last grandparent - and caretaker - was in the ground before she turned twenty-one. She's the last living member of her immediate family. Or so she thinks...

"We found my 'grandfather' sitting at his dining room table. An entire scorched pot of coffee dangled from his shaky hand. His skin was the ashen gray shade of thunderclouds, not the rich mocha from the photo I'd seen. There were dark blue circles under each swollen red eye. A halo of white hair skirted his bald head, a crown of tangles and mats. Corpses had more life in them."

Suddenly, instead of burying it with the dead, Jenny is forced to confront the past. Armed only with an ancient family journal, her rifle, and an Apache tomahawk, she must save her grandfather's life and embrace her dangerous heritage. Or be devoured by it.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 5 / 5

In BLOOD FUGUE, we're introduced to Jenny and her best friend, Marshal. Life has dealt Jenny some low blows. The fact that she hasn't buckled under the crap she's dealt with is not only amazing (I totally would not been sane or comprehensible) but shows her strength. She's snarky, fun to hang around with, and I would love to be her bestie! Plus with her purple fauxhawk and my pink hair, we'd make quite the pair!

And can I just say how much I love Marshal? The fact that he and Jenny stand out from everyone else in their tiny town with such confidence and flair makes me adore them even more. Marshal is such a cool guy, and it's obvious how much Jenny cares about him. It's also refreshing they're best friends without a romantic element to their relationship, proving a girl and a guy can be just friends. (You'll find out why they won't ever be more than just friends.)

BLOOD FUGUE is full of surprises with twists and turns. There's a huge revelation that I'll admit I never saw coming and was happy with the outcome. I think it adds to Jenny's badassery. This novelette is a quick and super fun read with the promise of more awesomeness ahead.

~ Book 2 Witch's Nocturne ~

After receiving an ancient tribal journal from her grandfather, Jenny is sent on a mission of discovery in an attempt to unravel clues to her family's monster hunting past. The journey becomes more than academic when she is asked to confront a coven of dangerous witches who plan to cast an insidious spell on the plains of West Texas.

~Book 3  Dark Prelude~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. Unfortunately, a lot of on-the-job training is required to be a monster hunter, and unlike her computer repair business, this gig could literally kill her.

DARK PRELUDE finds the feisty protagonist, Jenny, searching for her best friend Marshal's missing father in the midst of a freak, West Texas winter storm. To survive the frigid night, she'll have to deal with a hated town rival, face a monstrous creature no Moonsong hunter has ever encountered before, and undo a mysterious curse. Can she keep everyone alive? If not, who will pay the ultimate price?

~Book 4: Dragon's Game~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. She has already faced a werewolf, witches, and a troll. But nothing could prepare her for her latest confrontation...

DRAGON'S GAME, Moonsongs Book 4, finds Jenny out of her rural West Texas element, searching for an evil witch in an urban Houston nightclub. After attempting to help a handsome and mysterious stranger out of a jam, she finds herself on the run from a ruthless gang who are even more dangerous than they initially appear.

Forced into a twisted game of life and death, Jenny must navigate the complexity of a budding relationship, and somehow survive a night filled with unexpected horror and paranormal mystery.

DRAGON'S GAME is approximately 14,000 words or 45 pages of humor, horror and paranormal mystery. It is the fourth volume of the Moonsongs Books, an ongoing series of New Adult, urban fantasy novelettes by author E.J. Wesley.

~Book 5 Vampire's Ball~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. Being a girl of action, she has found herself particularly capable when it comes to battling the werewolves, trolls, and other supernatural denizens lurking in the Texas night. Until now.

VAMPIRE'S BALL, Moonsongs book 5, finds Jenny and her best friend Marshal in their most harrowing adventure yet. Traveling by boat to an extravagant masquerade party located at a Galveston Island mansion, Jenny must parlay with an ancient vampire in order to secure the release of the dragon princes, Isis. The unexpected return of an old "friend" turns the evening into chaos, and leaves Jenny and company once again fighting for survival amidst a sea of supernatural foes.

VAMPIRE'S BALL is approximately 12,500 words of humor, horror and paranormal mystery. It is the fifth volume of the Moonsongs Books, an ongoing series of New Adult, urban fantasy novelettes by author E.J. Wesley.

~Moonsongs Anthology~

The Moonsongs Anthology 1 collects the first three Moonsongs books - a series of New Adult paranormal-horror-action novelettes in one exciting volume. Follow Jenny and her best friend Marshal on their dangerous quest to unlock the secrets of her past.

Moonsongs Anthology 1 collects the three previously published Moonsongs adventures: BLOOD FUGUE (Book 1), WITCH'S NOCTURNE (Book 2), and DARK PRELUDE (Book 3).

~About the Author~

Growing up in small town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that's why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California - where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.

My passion for New Adult literature led me to producing the weekly New Adult Lit Chat on Twitter, and contributing to the NA Alley Blog. I'm also the author of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, speculative rural fantasy novelettes.
