~ About the Author: Mark Tufo ~

Mark Tufo is the creator of the Zombie Fallout series, which feature everyman hero Mike Talbot.

Mark Tufo was born in Boston Massachusetts. He attended UMASS Amherst where he obtained a BA and later joined the US Marine Corp. He was stationed at Parris Island SC, Twenty Nine Palms CA, and Kaneohe Bay HI.

After his tour of duty, he went into the Human Resources field with a worldwide financial institution and has since gone back to college at CTU to complete his Masters.

He wrote the first installment of the Indian Hill Trilogy whilst in college. This manuscript was stored in his garage until July 2009, when he published it on Kindle at his wife's insistence.

At the time of this writing, Mark has since written the extremely popular Zombie Fallout series comprised of six serial novels, one prequel novella (Dr. Hugh Mann), and a related side story following the plague from the point of view of a zombie retaining human sentience (Timothy); two additional installments of the popular Indian Hill series; a metaphysical horror novel (The Spirit Clearing); two books following the trials of domesticated pets in the time of a zombie plague (The Book of Riley 1 & 2); a young adult version of Indian Hill entitled The Ravin (with a YA version of Indian Hill 2 scheduled for release in 2013); and a contribution to a compilation of zombie short stories (Undead Tales).

Mark's books are generally written in a first person narrative style and crossover into several genres including horror, science fiction, and comedy. All of his books make some reference to the recurring semi-autobiographical character Michael Talbot and usually include some interesting insights into the real history of this unique author.

Mark Tufo lives in Maine with his wife, three kids, and two English bulldogs.

As of September 2012, Mark's first film, Zombie Fallout, is in pre-production with Illuminandi Media.

~ Synopsis ~

Haunted...

After watching her mother die in a car accident, sixteen-year-old Tandy McIntyre is plagued by violent dreams. Terrified to sleep and losing her grip on reality, she agrees to attend an experimental group retreat with Dr. Robert Gillman, an expert in lucid dreaming.

Trapped...

In the bitter cold of a Colorado winter, Tandy follows Dr. Gillman and his enigmatic son Cade as they lead a group of troubled teens into the wilderness. There, Dr. Gillman claims he will teach them to control their unconscious minds and master their dreams. But when the dreaming and the waking collide, will Tandy ever be safe again?

Don't fall asleep...

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 5 / 5

The synopsis for A Sleep So Dark was so utterly intriguing to me that I knew I had to read this. And what better time of year than close to Halloween? The entire premise just sounded so deliciously creepy to me that I couldn't resist. I love discussing dreams and the conscious/unconscious - as an undergrad studying for my degree in Psychology, I didn't put a lot of stock into Freudian theories but do think there's a lot we don't know about the unconscious part of our mind.

I dream almost every night, even if it seems the dream only lasted for a few minutes. Some people I know claim they don't dream, or if they do, then they almost never remember what they dreamed about. On the other hand, I remember most of the time - if not right when I wake up, then later in the day when something else triggers my memory. I find it so interesting that people can have such widely varying experiences while sleeping, something that we all do, or at least try to do.

The promise that Dr. Gillman makes when he says he can teach the group of teens how to control their dreams and the lines between waking and sleeping blurring really drew me to this book. I started freaking out in a Nightmare on Elm Street kind of way just thinking about the blurring of those lines. What's real and not real is or at least can be tenuous at best. When I'm dreaming, I rarely know in the dream that I'm not awake, which can get really scary when I'm having a horrific nightmare. With all of the horror movies, TV shows, and of course books I consume on a weekly basis, having nightmares is no surprise to me. Kind of comes with the territory. But it's still not fun while you're having the nightmare!

To begin with, Dr. Gillman is creepy to the point where I wouldn't want to be in the same house with him, let alone the same room. You just know deep down that something is very wrong with him. On top of that, the teens, including Dr. Gillman's son Cade, are isolated with him in a snowstorm at a remote lodge. They're in the middle of nowhere. A creepy doctor, a group of teens, an isolated location...the perfect setup for a heart stopping, nerve wracking, fingernail biting kind of reading experience.

There's a lot of tension between Dr. Gillman and Cade - it's obvious Cade knows his father is up to something, but it's a mystery as to exactly what Dr. Gillman is going to do and what he wants from it. That's one of the things that scared me the most. I read this in the middle of the night and jumped at the slightest noise. The tension was ratcheted up to a level I wasn't sure my heart or my nerves could take! Just be warned - if you chose to read this in the middle of the night like I did, you may find yourself staring up at the ceiling with your heart pounding out of your chest nowhere close to sleep.

Along with the mystery, tension, and creep factor, there's even romance. I don't know how Inara Scott managed to blend all of these elements together so beautifully, but she did a fantastic job. I found myself rooting for Cade and Tandy from the beginning. I really loved the characters in A Sleep So Dark. Each character in the group had his or her own distinct voice and personality. They were there for the same reason just with different circumstances. The characters were intriguing, the plot thickened, and I had to know what was going to happen next.

A Sleep So Dark has a beautifully haunting title and is a well thought out and written thriller that will keep you hooked until the very end.

~ About the Author: Inara Scott ~

I read my first romance when I was twelve, hiding in a storage closet among hat boxes and old shoes. When I was in high school, I wrote my first novel, a pirate romance called A Wild and Stormy Passion. (The heroine was the pirate, in case you're wondering.) Since then, I've written young adult novels and romance in almost every category.

I am a dabbler and an emotional sponge. I can't read scary books or anything with an unhappy ending. I reserve the right to love country music, puppies, true love, and happily ever after.

I review books I want to share the word about.

Life's too short to read something you don't enjoy!

~ Synopsis ~

*A novella to the best-selling New Adult novel STRIPPED*

The sexual content in this novella is more explicit than STRIPPED and is recommended for 17+

She was broken when I met her, shattered from the death of her sister and running from love. Not to sound like an egotistical douche or anything, but I fixed her. Put her back together, filled in the cracks, and made her whole. A true fairytale in her eyes.

But now real life is getting in the way: school, jobs, and the unexpected opportunity to travel the world under a legendary photographer. This internship will open doors not even my father's influence could. It's something I've been waiting all my life for. But so is Quinn, and accepting this internship will mean leaving her.

And breaking her all over again.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 3 / 5

I read Stripped and Without You back to back in one day. I couldn't leave Quinn and Torrin, and when it was over, I couldn't stop thinking about this couple. Stripped left such a deep impression on me that I almost feel like it wasn't fair of me to read them so close together.

While I was wanting more of Quinn and Torrin, I find that I enjoy Quinn's point-of-view more than Torrin's. Nothing against Torrin - I love him! I think I wasn't quite ready for them to be tested quite so soon after just getting together.

I was disappointed with Torrin in this novella because he underestimates Quinn - she wouldn't stand in the way of his dream, and he should know that. I loved the sizzle of their relationship being explored further here, and overall, I liked reading more of Quinn and Torrin's story.

~ Synopsis ~

On an English university campus, Ava is hunting Keir. She needs his Nephilim soul to trade for her freedom.

But Ava didn't expect to find terrible secrets about the fate of the souls she takes. Or fall in love.

Soul-hunter Ava has retrieved hundreds of souls from demons but has never been assigned the dangerous mission for a Nephilim soul. When she arrives on campus and meets Keir, she discovers he has secrets more valuable than his Nephilim soul - secrets she could trade for the life she wants. She also meets Dahlia, the human girl with an inexplicable hold over Keir, and secrets of her own.

When she uncovers the true fate of the souls she takes back to her superiors, and what Keir is doing to try and prevent it, Ava's world is turned upside down.

Forced into a battle where the lines between good and evil are blurred, Ava is faced with the choice between saving herself by betraying those around her, or helping Keir and risking her life.

Ava's ultimate choice: retrieve Keir's soul and live, or join his battle and risk going to Hell.

Warning: This book contains graphic language

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 4 /5

Soul Ties captured me immediately with its synopsis and the girl with pink hair on the cover. I love pink hair! This book did not disappoint - everything it promised, it delivered. The world as Ava knew it is ripped out from under her, and she begins to wonder if she really ever knew anything about her job at all. I wanted to know why and how she made the decision to become a soul-hunter when she was a teenager, especially after she was warned about all of the problems she could face with that single decision.

Dahlia is a mystery, and I couldn't help but feel Ava needed to be friendlier to her. She has a very surprising past and is linked to Keir in that past in surprising ways. Dahlia and Keir's relationship makes more sense once you find out what they've been through together. Dahlia didn't start out as a character I liked very much, but I began to like her the more I got to know her.

Keir is the perfect match for Ava in my opinion. As much as Ava tries to give the impression she's a tough and ruthless soul-hunter, Keir saw through her facade the moment they met. She's actually incredibly vulnerable and seemed at times to be close to letting that vulnerability slip through. The chemistry between Keir and Ava sizzled, and he turns her world upside down with the revelations about what really happens to the souls Ava collects and turns in. I thought the twist was pure genius.

I kept rooting for Ava to choose to fight alongside Keir rather than collect his soul. I understood her indecision though - her relationship with Keir is fraught with tension because neither can fully trust the other. She had to make a choice with the risk of Keir lying to her to save his soul from being collected, so it made sense that she would proceed with caution. She can't just believe him right off the bat when she was sent there to kill him for his soul. I did wish that Ava had been a stronger female character. I liked that she had vulnerability, but she seemed a little weak to me at times that didn't have anything to do with feeling vulnerable.

If you're looking for something different from vampires and werewolves in the paranormal department, Soul Ties is an excellent book for you to read. I love this book and can't wait for the next installment!

~ Synopsis ~
Elijah is nothing special. He's just a skinny kid doing his best to stay one step ahead of starvation and the people who would have him locked away in a labour camp - just another Runner. But what he stumbles upon in a forest in Hampshire shows him that the harsh world he knows will become an even more sinister place, unless he can stop it.

As past and present and parallel dimensions collide, freedom becomes the last thing on his mind as he is suddenly faced with a battle to save his world from extinction. But before Elijah can find the courage to be the hero the world needs, he must banish his own demons and learn to trust his friends. And all the while, the sinister figure of Maxwell Braithwaite looms, his path inextricably bound to Elijah's by a long dead physicist, and hell bent on stopping Elijah, whatever the cost.

~ My Review ~

My Rating: 4 / 5

Runners is a different kind of dystopia with adding science fiction into the mix. I was taken by complete surprise when the story took a direction I never saw coming, even though I had read the synopsis and thought I understood what the story was all about.

When I began reading, I couldn't help but feel like I had been mislead. The story seemed really slow with much of the same things happening over and over - one of the group would get hurt, or their shelter was discovered and they would be forced to leave. Now that I look back, I still think the book took too long getting to the meat of the story, but the premise is still genius. It just would have worked better to get there sooner so as not to lose the reader in the process.

The main character, Elijah, was so frustrating! He made terrible decisions that cost the group their sense of safety and the fragile trust they had in him. Xavier never liked him and had wanted to leave him in the beginning, which I thought was harsh but as the story progressed, I started thinking maybe they should have left him behind. I soon learned Xavier is a hypocrite as he's keeping secrets of his own - huge secrets that I never would have guessed in a million years.

Sharon Sant's writing is flawless, and she can definitely bring you into her world without any distractions. The world she describes is harsh and depressing, which is exactly as she intended in order to tell this story. There were a few words I had to look up which I found out were British slang so then I didn't feel so bad for not knowing their meanings right away. I was happy with the shocking direction the story took and still can't get this world and these characters out of my mind.

Really Cool Weekend!

My group of friends from high school - we're still causing trouble to this day <3

From left to right: me (pink hair lol), my son in front of me, my friend Jessica's daughter next to my son, Jill, Erin (yellow scarf), Lauren, Lena (back), Morgan (green hoodie), Jessica (back), and Sarah (blue shirt)

We're missing Katie and Jami. Katie wasn't able to come up from Texas to join us. Friday was her birthday, too, so we toasted her at the bar after the football game. (The kids were dropped off at home before the bar, lmao!!)

First, we met up at our local Mexican restaurant, La Palma.

Lena & Sarah <3

Then off to the football game at our old high school!

Something must have been super funny to me & Jill lol

Jill, Lena, & Sarah @ the game

Lauren & Lena, sisters who actually get along ;D
I'm in the background pretending I'm not there, lol

Lauren, Me, & Lena

The UHS Marching Band's Senior Show
Ah, the memories!

Jessica <3

Jack & me at the football game

Doesn't look like much to anyone who wasn't part of our group. ;)
However, this was THE spot we hung out at during lunch before we got our driver's licenses. We stayed warm here in the winter, too. Our school was soooo drafty!

So after the game and the kiddos were dropped off, we all went out together to the bar and had a blast. I really miss our group - we've all gone off in different directions and most of us have moved away except me and Jessica. But we all still stay in touch regularly and having graduated high school fourteen years ago (omigod!!) that's pretty damn good.

It's my dream one day to have a picture of all of us and our kids. That's my goal.

It'll be a challenge - Lauren, Lena, and Morgan live in Austin, Sarah lives an hour away, Erin lives an hour away, Jill will be moving back to New York, so...that's why this weekend was so special to me. It's so rare so many of us can get together at one time.

How was your weekend guys??

*Edit: All photos (except the selfie of me and Jack) taken by Morgan Colbert. Click here to check out her insanely awesome photography skills on Instagram. She's extremely modest, but the girl's got skills. :D *
