Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life.

However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well.

Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly.

Intrinsical is a terrific start to a promising trilogy! The way the book began and is written was phenomenal. I was hooked immediately and connected with the characters right away. Yara is my new favorite heroine in YA for sure. You know why? Mostly because she doesn't go all ga-ga over a guy. Very refreshing!

Yara is a smart and likable character. She has great friends in Cherie and Cherie's boyfriend, Steve. I loved the banter between Brent and her. Almost even more than that, I loved that when he calls Cherie "crazy" she stands up for Cherie and begins avoiding him. I cheered for her - I just thought that was so cool and brave, especially because she liked him, and they seemed like there was a mutual attraction between them.

I must admit I did like Brent right away though some things he said and did made me cringe at times. He's funny and smart which made him a great complement to Yara. He met his match with her! I liked the secret they share and that he was willing to help her. I also liked that she wasn't so easily persuaded by him.

There's so much about Intrinsical to love. As a fan of the movie, Donnie Darko, that touches on astral projection, I loved that astral projection plays an important role in this story. The setting, the characters, the plot, and the writing all combine to make for an addictive read. I'm so excited for what's to come in this trilogy.

Synopsis

Yara is beginning to understand just how much her life will change now that her Waker abilities have emerged. She has come to terms with the fact that seeing ghosts is part of her life, but she isn't ready to let being a Waker dictate her choices. All she wants is a ghost-free senior year with her boyfriend, Brent, and her best friend, Cherie.

But Yara soon discovers that there are more dark secrets in her school's history than just the curse she broke. While an angry ghost makes Yara question everything she thought she knew about spirits, she and Brent learn that there are long reaching consequences to last year's adventures.

As new enemies emerge and old ghosts resurface, Yara finds herself in the center of another deadly mystery, and this time she has to contend with the living as well as the dead.

Synopsis

Three years. So much has changed for Yara, yet much is still the same.

Yara has spent the last three years in Brazil, diligently studying with Vovó to develop her Waker abilities and desperately searching for a cure for Brent. Though her powers - and her control over them - have grown, every possible cure for Brent fails. And they're running out of the only medicine that keeps him alive.

When a letter from the American Wakers recalls Yara and Vovó to California, Yara has to weigh the fading chance of saving Brent against the dangers of placing them all within the grasp of an old enemy. Not only has his power grown, but the barrier between our world and the spirit world is becoming dangerously thin. As the threat to the Wakers increases, Yara doesn't know if she'll be strong enough to defeat him.

Her only hope is to put her trust in some unexpected allies and fully embrace her Waker heritage. If she fails, not only could Brent die, but the power of the Wakers could disappear forever.

About the Author

I've been an avid reader since elementary school. In sixth grade I began writing stories and recruiting (with force when necessary) my friends to act them out. I've always loved scary stories, and have a hard time enjoying any book without at least a little romance in it.
