EXCERPT

“You talk a lot,” he stated very matter-of-factly.

And that had her laughing again. She liked his bluntness. “I know. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn’t. I tend to chatter more when I’m nervous. Most of the time I don’t even realize I’m doing it. The words just keep coming and I’ll end up flowing from one topic to another with no end in sight.”

“You mean like now?”

Brooke immediately stopped talking and considered him. “Oh. I guess I was kind of yammering on there.”

Why are you nervous?”

Was he kidding? She shrugged and twisted the shoulder strap of her purse. “You make me that way.”

Owen’s eyes went wide. “Me?” he asked incredulously. “I make you nervous?”

She nodded. “You’re a little intimidating.”

“Me?” his voice came out almost as a squeak.

Brooke nodded again. “You are a highly respected man, Owen. I’m sure you’re used to sitting around and talking with people who are more on your level. I’m afraid of saying something ridiculous and putting my foot in my mouth.”

“Brooke, I…I don’t even know how to respond to that. I’m intimidated by you.”

She already knew that just by how her uncle had prepared her, but she was curious about how he saw himself. “Why?”

“I may be respected here on campus or in my field of study, but…that’s it. Outside of the lab and away from the telescope, I’m fairly invisible.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

He gave a mirthless laugh. “Trust me. As you learned the other day, my brother is one of the most popular rock stars in the world. Do you think anyone sees me when he’s around?”

In that instant, she did just want to reach out and hug him.

“I have five siblings including Riley—four brothers and one sister,” he said, not meeting her gaze. “They all have impressive jobs and wonderful lives. All of my brothers are married and have kids. Well, Riley and Savannah just found out they’re pregnant so…” He stopped abruptly and this time he looked directly at her. “Forget you heard that,” he said quickly. “No one is supposed to know! Dang it.”

And that was totally adorable—he didn’t even curse.

Unable to help herself, Brooke reached out and placed a hand on his arm. They both seemed a little shocked by the contact. He was…muscular. Much more so than she would have imagined. Forcing herself to not focus on that, she gave him a reassuring smile. “You don’t have to worry. Their secret is safe with me.”

Owen nodded and gave her a small smile. “Thank you.”

She felt like they were having a moment.

And she didn’t really want it to end.

Patience…

“Okay,” she finally said, taking a step back. “Tell me what I can get you from Starbucks and I’ll meet you in your office in an hour.”

Anna can tell Quinn anything, except the big secret she's been hiding for years-that she's fallen in love with him. Now Anna is determined to make a life for herself that doesn't include hopeless pining. But just as she's ready to move on, Quinn seems determined not to let go-and the way he's looking at her might be enough to finally change them from best friends to best everything.

BOOK 4 - THIS IS OUR SONG

Entertainment reporter Savannah Daly is completely unfazed by pretty-boy rock stars. She's just here to get her interview and write her story. Instead, Riley brings her home to the shores of the Carolinas where she's immediately embraced by his sprawling, rambunctious family. An Announcement from Nazarea Andrews! #SHADESOFBLUE

Today we are revealing a special announcement from author Nazarea Andrews. Check out the author's note, excerpt, and teaser below for details!

SHADES OF BLUE announcement 2

NOTE FROM NAZAREA ANDREWS:

This year, I’m doing something super fun—I’m releasing an entire novel in serial format, with a new installment coming every week. And the only way to read it is to sign up for my newsletter!!! I know, I know! Newsletter—all the spam. But I promise. No spam. Aside from the weekly story updates, I’ll probably send one newsletter a month announcing new releases or upcoming events. And that’s it.

So here’s a bit about this sexy new thriller.

Shades of Blue

Caledon Peterson came to Northern University for one thing: to find his missing brother. But the college is a hive of secrets, and he’s quickly drowning in them.

Indigo Kennish is a junior, an activist and an enigma, someone he can’t quite figure out with electric blue hair, a bad attitude, and lips he can’t quit thinking about. Violet Rice is the picture perfect sorority girl, daughter of the dean and blatant about wanting him. But neither girl is telling him the whole truth.

And someone is killing students at the university.

As the body count grows, and the truth about his brother comes to light Caledon is drawn closer to both girls, and the secrets threaten to bury them all.

Go back to Northern in a new novel that tells the curse of Bluebeard in a modern dark thriller where you never know who to trust.

  Shades Teaer 3

EXCERPT FROM SHADES OF BLUE:

I hate Northern. I hated it when I visited it the first time, when I told Dad to fuck himself and his alma mater. I hated it every time I came back, for one of my brother’s graduation.

I hate it now, more than ever. Because this time I’m here to find the brother who vanished on its fucking campus. I sit on the stone stoop, and stare at the students bustling around campus like it holds the secrets to their entire world.

Hell, maybe it does. For me, it holds the secrets of my brother, and that’s enough.

Freshman orientation is in an hour, and I stretch my legs. It wouldn’t do to be late, not at my first official function.

A few girls sashay by, and I can feel their eyes, hot and assessing.
It’s not terribly surprising. I’m a Peterson, after all. We are born lucky, blessed with wealthy and intelligence, and damn good genetics. I flash them a quick smirk, and one, the one in the middle, blushes, a deep bloom of color that trails down her neck. I laugh soundlessly as the ringleader pulls away her minions, gossiping as fast as they go.

Lane has been missing for six months. Since March. And the cops say nothing happened—he answers his emails, and he says he’s in Europe for a while, getting a fresh look on shit after a bad breakup.

But I know my brother. And Lane isn’t in fucking Europe. He hated Europe—we always ditched mom and dad, ending up in some shitty hotel in Amsterdam, blitzed out of our minds. Dad hated that I subverted Lane. The older guys never fell for my shit. But Lane—we were separated by three years, but he was the best friend I could ask for.

I shake my head, and glance down at the email again. It’s from last October, talking about a girl he had just started seeing, a girl who would break his heart. They’re saying he ran from her.

Mega wealthy Tanner Storm has it all- great looks, wealth, and nothing holding him down. Then, his father decides to play games with him and his siblings, handing him an apartment complex in downtown Seattle that Tanner wants nothing to do with. When the conditions of his father's terms ensure that he do something with this building or lose his inheritance, he at first thinks, so what. But, then it becomes a challenge that he has to accept, because he's never before backed down. He decides to tear down the building and start fresh with something far more appealing that will add to his already fat wallet.

The only problem is that the residents don't want to leave, and under the contract with his father, he can't force them out. When he ends up before Judge Kragle from all the complaints made against him, the judge decides the best punishment for him will be two weeks of living in the very apartment complex he despises and two weeks of community service, playing Santa Claus at the mall. Perfect! This is not the Christmas of his dream.

The plot thickens when he meets his neighbor, Kyla and falls into instant lust. Will this turn out to be Tanner's secret angel, or will he forget all about her the minute he leaves?

Enjoy this Anderson Christmas Novel from NYT Best Selling Author Melody Anne who wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and an even happier New Year.

Excerpt #1

"Mr. Storm, you may think that you're above the law, but I guarantee you that you are not! This is the fourth time I've seen you in my courtroom in the last three months. It's become a bad habit, one that I don't appreciate. I don't care how much you're paying your group of attorneys. It's not getting you out of trouble this time."

"Your Honor--"

The judge did not take kindly to Tanner Storm's interruption. "Do not make me add contempt of court to your list of crimes," Judge Kragle said. "The conditions of your building are unacceptable. I'm absolutely appalled that you'd leave women and children with no heat, with no working elevators, and with leaky pipes. I've thought long and hard about your punishment--"

Excerpt #2

After a week in the hospital, she'd been released, with nowhere to go where she felt safe. After dropping out of school - she couldn't face anything or anyone - she'd found herself at this apartment, both her place of refuge and a spot where she hoped to heal someday.

She knew it wasn't her fault that her family was gone. But why was she the only one to live? Why wasn't it her mother, who did charity work, or her father, who made a difference in the world through his teaching? Why couldn't her brother have survived? He'd graduated from high school the previous June and planned to join the military after college. He'd have been an officer and a gentleman.

Excerpt #3

Kyla jumped at the sound of Tanner's quiet voice. They hadn't said much at all since she'd returned to his apartment to find him ready to go. And now she'd been so lost in her thoughts that she'd forgotten his very existence.

Was this a mistake, she wondered, coming here on Christmas morning? If so, when would be the right time? If she was going to this, now was as good a time as any.

Because her fingers were shaking too badly to insert the house key in the lock, Tanner gently took it from her hand, set it in the keyhole, and turned. The sound of the long-unused lock clicking open seemed louder to Kyla than a rifle shot. He didn't touch the knob, just waited to see what she would do next.

Bone DeepAbout Bone Deep: The boy who wants forgiveness…

Haunted by the train accident his father instigated, college freshman Krister Ledoux is obsessed with finding the person sending him cryptic hate mail. He knows it’s one of them—a family member of one of the accident victims, and he’s willing to go to hell and back to find out which one.

The girl he can’t forget…

She was a stranger who kissed him in the middle of the train station, and now she’s the girl who pleads with her eyes for Krister to be the distraction she’s so desperate for. Krister doesn’t know what it is about her, why he’s sucked into playing Cambria’s game… All he knows is that when he’s with her, he isn’t consumed with thoughts of the crash.

The collision that can’t be avoided…

Cambria doesn’t know who Krister is—that he’s the son of the town’s most infamous killer, and he knows if his true identity surfaces he’ll lose her forever. However secrets can’t stay buried forever, and now Krister must fight to prove that their bone-deep connection is far more powerful than the hatred she now has toward him.

She stares at me, tracing her finger over my face, my eyebrows, the two-day-old stubble on my jaw. I catch her hand and kiss her knuckles, then wrist. "It's just..." Jesus, how do I say this? "My life's a little complicated right now, and I'm trying not to drag you into the middle of it." The look she gives me is one I'm starting to recognize. The one that makes it seem like she understands there's something more I want to tell her, but can't. Or don't know how. "On top of that...I'm a dickhead. And being with me will ultimately result in me hurting you, and I don't want to hurt you."

"Actually..." She lowers my palm to her thigh, narrowing her gaze onto mine. "...you being concerned about hurting me is very non-dickhead-ish of you." Little by little, she slides my hand up her leg and around her ass. "Besides, what if I want to be in the middle of it?"

I slam my eyes shut, my fingers burning at the touch of her. She doesn't know what she's asking for. Being with me - being constantly reminded of her dead mother - will slowly but surely kill her inside. And I'm not a murderer like my father.

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane. I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy.

I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there.

Until one day, there was.

Our world isn’t what we think. There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things.

Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are.

They’re very real, and they’re terrifying.

I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true.

There’s only one thing I know for sure.

Nothing is what it seems.

  Guardian Available now

Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.

   Happy birthday to me.
I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life.
   It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want.
I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me.
I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket. Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window.
My room is completely dark and I glance at my clock in confusion.
   3:00 a.m.
As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room.
In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary.
I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain.
As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning.
Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it. And there are no trees near enough to brush against it. It was just a dream.
   It was only a dream.
I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream.
But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again.
A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature.
I notice because I can see my breath.
Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air.
   Holy crap. Oh my God.
   What the hell?
The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear.
Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall. They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move.
My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move. I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it. Something terrifying.
With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed.
The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow.
I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat. Because that’s the only explanation. I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down.
But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction.
   74 degrees.
It must be broken. It has to be broken.
My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants.
My fear isn’t logical. I know there’s nothing here. I’m the only one in this room.
   Or am I?
The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real. Something unseen.
My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight. I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor. I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down.
The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance.
I struggle to focus, to see what it is.
But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20.
   Twenty degrees?
The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe.
All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me. It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules. It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black.
   Something is here.
   With me.
“Dad?” I whisper in a white puff. Because what else could it be?
I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision. The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain.
   Then there’s nothing.

I think all of us as human beings wonder at some point why we're here, why we have to die, and what will happen to us after we die. Guardian is a story which explores possible answers to those questions. Reading this novel was emotional in a positive way and even comforting at times in terms of grief and life and death. I can't remember identifying with a character as much as I did Whitney with the way she grieved for her father.

At the beginning of Guardian, Whitney's dad died several weeks ago, leaving behind her and her mom and younger sister. Since his death, Whitney's mom has been wrapped in a deep depression, and Whitney becomes the glue holding everything together. She begins caring for her sister, cooking, paying the bills...all of the tasks adults are responsible for doing.

On top of taking on these heavy responsibilities, she's also heavily grieving and only sixteen years old. So it's completely understandable that when she starts having difficulty differentiating between dreams and reality and seeing things out of the corner of her eye, she thinks she's losing it. I would think that about myself as well!

Reading about Whitney's feelings of loss will probably always stay with me. I lost my mom to cancer right when I started high school, and while I didn't have to step in and take care of my little sister, I had the feeling I should and even wanted to. Not that I ever thought I could take our mom's place, but I knew my sister didn't get as many years with her as I did and wanted to care for her like a mom would.

I will say I'm glad I wasn't in Whitney's situation.
There isn't anything more frightening to me than demons. Not even zombies. Wars between angels and demons fighting over human's souls - the stakes can't get much higher than life, death and the beyond. There were some tense moments where I had no idea what was going to happen. I went along for the ride and was not disappointed!

Guardian is the first book by Courtney Cole I've read, and I'm definitely a fan. This novel satisfied my craving for an angel/demon story and will stay with me long after the last page.

My Rating:

To celebrate the release of GUARDIAN and Courtney's birthday the following books are on sale for .99, today only!
