Surviving above ground takes more strength than she ever thought she had, and she finds she must rely on the Designer even more. Answers aren't as clear to her above as they were in the State. She doubts people she has always trusted and trusts people others say should be doubted. She pushes herself in ways she never imagined and faces tragedies that threaten to cripple her. Thalli is brought to her knees - literally, emotionally, and spiritually - and she is not the same person at the end of this book as she was at the beginning.
