Publication date: August 7th 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance

If you find yourself talking to Jayne Dandy, keep the conversation on Star Wars and rubber ducks - best not to mention men, dating, or S-E-X. Because Jayne is fine with the way things are: writer of obituaries and garage sale ads by day, secret scribe of adventures in distant galaxies by night. But her crippling fear of intimacy has made her the butt of jokes since forever, and hiding behind her laptop isn't going to get her lightsaber lit.

After her therapist recommends that she write erotica as a form of exposure therapy, Jayne joins forces with pen and paper to combat the demons that won't let her kiss and tell. Unexpectedly downsized at work, she adopts a pseudonym and secretly self-publishes one of her naughty books to make ends meet. When her adorable, long-time friend Luke, co-owner of the popular Portland food truck Luke Piewalker's, hears she's been demoted, he insists on hiring her to sling eclairs and turnovers at his side. Her secret must be kept, but sparks ignite between them, sending Jayne and her X-Wing into a tailspin that will either make her face down her neuroses or trigger a meltdown of Death Star proportions.

With the promises of geeking out to Star Wars and reading about awesome witty characters, I couldn't wait to dig into Neurotica! Having read Eliza Gordon's previous release, Must Love Otters, I knew I was going to be laughing out loud with every page.

Jayne is just...REAL. She's not perfect, doesn't look like a model, and loves Star Wars. She's average like me! I love reading about characters that are down-to-earth and don't wake up looking like they're ready to walk down a runway. I adored her - she has some psychological hang-ups about getting romantic, and I can understand that fear she had. She's witty and intelligent, and you can't help but want her to succeed in finding happiness.

I loved that Luke had so much in common with Jayne. They could geek out over Star Wars together, he helped her out by giving her a job at his food truck when she was laid off from the newspaper, and I kept wondering when are they going to realize they would be great together???
You know, there's another guy in this story who really surprised me, and I wondered where, if anywhere, that was going to go.

My only problem was the drama towards the end. It changed the way I looked at a couple of the characters, but it didn't ruin the book for me or anything.

I love Eliza Gordon's sense of humor that she infuses into her books, and Neurotica is definitely a side-splitter. The characters she breathed life into in this book are quirky and remind me in some ways of people I know in real life. Jayne is like the underdog everyone will want to root for. If you like laughing, witty characters, and spectacular writing, you need to read Neurotica!!

My Rating:

A purveyor of fictions, Eliza Gordon has excellent taste in books, shoes, movies, and friends, and questionable sanity in the realm of love. Best leave that one alone. http://www.elizagordon.com

Synopsis

Hollie Porter is the chairwoman of General Disillusioned: at twenty-five years old, she's saddled with a job she hates, a boyfriend who's all wrong for her, and a vexing inability to say no. She's already near her breaking point, so when one caller too many kicks the bucket during Hollie's 911 shift, she cashes in the Sweethearts' Spa & Stay gift certificate from her dad and heads to Revelation Cove, British Columbia. One caveat: she's going solo. Any sweethearts will have to be found on site.

Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she's providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can't stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn't mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day ... and maybe even herself in the process.

My Thoughts

MUST LOVE OTTERS came highly recommended from a friend of mine, and I'm SO glad she suggested I give this book a try. Omigod, I laughed so hard, but I had to try to hold it in because I was shaking with laughter and didn't want to wake up my husband. I contemplated reading out in the living room but didn't want to leave my warm comfy bed. I had to wipe tears away! My chest ached from attempting to keep the laughter from escaping. It was painful, lol.

It's an amazing talent to be able to convey snarky wit and humor in the manner that this husband-and-wife team, Eliza Gordon, did. They pulled it off big time. They SLAYED me. I bow down to their genius. Seriously.

In the beginning of MUST LOVE OTTERS, it was painful to read about how unhappy Hollie felt, and the way she was treated by her boyfriend, supervisor, co-workers, and even people whose emergency calls she takes at the 911 dispatch center - the ones who yell at her and don't really have emergencies. But the pain was replaced by wonderful changes Hollie makes. She has the courage to turn everything upside down in an effort to find out what she wants from life.

There were sweet, romantic moments that had me feeling so happy for Hollie. She's so relatable - I know what it feels like to be disenchanted with the way I'm living and worry that I'm settling for mediocrity rather than taking a risk for real and true happiness. The trip to Revelation Cove, Hollie's early birthday gift from her father, couldn't have come at a better time for her, and I think the name of the cove is perfect for what she went there to do. She has a huge revelation that changes her life forever.

I can't recommend MUST LOVE OTTERS enough. It's a read that will make you laugh so hard you'll feel like you've done a thousand sit-ups! Which is a terrific feeling.
