Synopsis

Dezdamona Kabinosh is on a mission - a mission of love. And she traveled back in her own timeline to complete it. After being betrayed by her husband she's seeking a second chance at love, and Dez has come up with the perfect plan.

One problem though...Jaxson Kabinosh, her future husband, has also traveled back in time and he's determined to keep Dez for himself. Who will win the ultimate battle for Dez's heart? Jaxson, or her possible rebound guy?

Rewound hit me fast, and I couldn't get enough. I remember feeling disbelief when I saw I was halfway through the book already; I just didn't want it to end. The time travel aspect of the story drew me in, and the idea of going back in time for a do-over is completely appealing. I was even more satisfied with the story than I thought I could be. Rewound had me laughing, crying, and smiling, sometimes all at the same time!

Dez and Jax have been married longer than most people are alive. They love each other, and they have intense physical chemistry even after all of their years of marriage. I quickly became invested in their relationship even though from the synopsis I thought for sure I wouldn't like Jax. Surprise - I ended up loving him! Both of these characters are awesome yet have their flaws, too, which made them stand out as real people in my mind.

Their story flew by - I was that into my reading. Nothing could have interrupted me save for a tornado, and maybe not even then.  The shenanigans they got into were so funny and at times sweet, and it was all in the name of happiness. We all want to be happy. If you had a chance to travel back in time and make different choices in the hopes of finding happiness, would you do it? I would, not because I'm terribly unhappy with how my life has turned out, but I'd love to relive parts of my life knowing what I know now.

I think the biggest surprise for Dez is when she realizes Jax has followed her back in time. She thought it was going to be a simple task - all she had to do was go back in time to fall in love with another guy instead of Jax, and then Jax would never have the chance to hurt her. This was a snap decision she made thinking it would fix everything and that she'd get her happily ever after. But I don't think she thought about all of the things that could potentially go wrong, and that Jax has followed her leads to all kinds of complications.

Rewound is creative and addictive, and I didn't want it to end. Ever. The writing and characters will draw you in right away and won't let you go. I know I'll still be thinking about this book months from now. It's THAT good.

Blitz: Giveaway & Excerpt ~ Wasteland by Lindsay Leggett

Wasteland by Lindsay Leggett
(Flight #2)
Published December 7th 2013
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Blitz organized by: Xpresso Book Tours

Synopsis:
Wasteland, the next book in the FLIGHT trilogy, takes place a few months after the ending of book one.

Trapped in a cell and experimented on, Piper Madden's only hope is remembering Asher. Then, Elder Corp President Rupert Elder gives her new orders: to be a leader in a war against the Harpies. Without a choice, Piper must obey Rupert's commands or suffer from paralyzing and painful Nanomachines. But the war is just beginning, and Asher has gone missing. The resistance is slowly building, and the upcoming war will be larger and bloodier than anything seen since the Devastation that ruined the earth. Throughout all of this, Piper remembers the time before she ran to Ichton, when David was alive and her hope in Elder Corp was still strong.

About the Author

Nearly every writer struggles to put together information about themselves, perhaps because we're so used to detailing the lives and ways of others. For the most part I am a writer, editor, photographer, and all-around artist living in the wilds north of Toronto, Ontario. I thrive on the juxtaposition of beauty and grit, enjoy urban crawls, indie everything, and time well-spent in the woods.

BEFORE
Dust slides past my feet on the wind as we trudge through the wasteland. Both Essa and I are completely suited in anti-rad gear, and every step seems like we're travelling on an alien planet.

Surrounding the main entrance to Central and the guard tower is nothing but dead earth; pale and wispy, patterned with the petrified remains of what were once majestic trees.

Off in the distance there is a hint of green; the Fresh-Air Compounds Elder Corp is building for the rich; areas enclosed with filtering glass so that only pure air can exist within. They look like massive snow globes, though I doubt I'll ever see the inside of one.

Beside me, Essa huffs impatiently.

"Why didn't we ask for a buggy or something? This wind is unreal," she complains.

"And how are we supposed to remain hidden while driving a cart around?" I counter. Sweat is already building inside my suit. The hot sun glares at us, defying us for coming above ground.

Our plans are haphazard at best. We couldn't let anyone know where we were going or why, and our search is going to be worse than trying to find a needle in a haystack; we have an entire world to explore.

But we trudge along, and soon enough Central Tower is no longer in sight; we are alone in the wild.

"Have you been up here before?" I ask. I motion for Essa to stop, to take a break beneath the shade of a masssive rock. She shakes her head.

"No, I've only done VR Mods. I'm sure you've been up here like a hundred times," she remarks. I burst out laughing despite myself.

"You think they let just anybody up here? It costs the Corp a fortune." Seeing her hurt expression, I add, "I've only been up here once or twice, and never as far as we are now. The tower has too many defense features. Even the most feral of Harpies know they don't stand a chance."

The shade is glorious after the scorching walk, and the sun is finally starting to set. I'd forgotten how blistering the real sun is; underground the temperature is always perfect.

"Look at that," Essa murmurs. I follow her gaze to the horizon. The sky is illuminated in pinks and reds and dusky purples. The colors explode and melt together; a tapestry of the death of the sun. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

"I guess we really can't replicate everything," I reply in a whisper.

We move onward, silent from nature's embrace. My mind tumbles through thoughts and images: Tor, David, the Harpy I'd let live. Shards of guilt shoot through my stomach, but there is no such thing as going back to the past; I know that, at least.

Night is just starting to darken the sky when I hear it; the slightest of noises. I raise a hand to halt Essa in her place, and motion for her to keep quiet. I close my eyes to let the sounds travel to my ear.

There is the crackle of fire; something I've only heard once or twice in real life; the crunch of sand as feet dance through them; the whoosh of twirling fabric; the giggling of a small child, then the hushing back to near-silence.

I gesture in the direction of the sounds with my eyes, and Essa follows my lead. Ahead of us there is a rocky crag, and my senses tell me that the beings are beneath, half-hidden in the shelter of the rock.

Our suits make only the slightest of noise as we creep forward to the apex of the rocks. Just as the crackling of the fire becomes loud enough, we drop to the ground, crawling across sharp rocks and slimy algae.

My heart beats like crazy as we reach the tip of the rock. The scene is probably fifty feet below us, but my mind races as if it's mere inches away.

A Harpy family.

They surround the fire, their wings hanging gracefully above them. The children are both girls, who wear twirling skirts as they dance about the fire. The father is garbed in a shaggy shirt and slacks, while the mother remains seated on the ground, skirt spread around her as she skins some meat that I hope to hell isn't Human.

What the hell are they doing living so close to Central? And why is there just one family? All of our studies have shown Harpies to travel in large groups, with a hierarchy of alpha and beta males and females. This family is entirely different. They don't look vicious; they look...happy.

For a moment it's like I'm watching a vid-screen; a documentary about the idyllic life of nomad aliens on another planet.

But then Essa's foot slips - only an inch - but I now the sound is enough to break the silence.

Immediately the mother Harpy snarls, and her face contorts to a wicked, ugly glower as her gaze searches for us.

"Let's move, " I whisper.

My body takes over; no room for thought or speculation. We leap from the crag, gravel and rock spilling beneath us. Essa pulls out her pistols and as soon as she lands, aims for the father Harpy's head.

Her first shot misses, but her second is dead on, burrowing into the forehead of the Harpy. His angry scowl remains as his body withers and crumbles into dust. The bullet cap clinks as it lands on a slab of granite.

On my end, I face the mother. Immediately it's clear that she's the leader of the family. She lunges for me, her gray wings shaking and her sharp teeth bared.

I dodge her attack, grabbing a dagger from my boot and lashing out at her, but I miss. She cackles as she glides just shy of my blade, and her wings lift her into the air.

A quick glance sideways confirms that one of the children is dead, and Essa is combating the other, chasing her across the dusty ground.

I sheath my dagger and pull out my crossbow from my back holster. I've only got one chance at this before she leaves her child behind and flies off into the night

I steady my footing and nock a bolt. She darts back and forth, almost in a figure-eight fashion.

How am I going to do this?

But then her child cries out in fear, and for just a moment, the mother Harpy lets her guard down, eyes searching for her baby.

I take my chance and release the bolt. It sinks in just to the left of her heart. She wails once she realizes what has happened, and tries to pull the bolt out from her chest.

She's too late, though. The poison from the bolt has already activated in her blood stream. Her cry is cut off as her body disintegrates, showering ash over us from the sky. I exhale in relief, then Essa's voice sounds.

"Piper," she says. I look over to her. The remaining Harpy child is in front of her, eyes wide with fear at the sight of her family's deaths. She does not run or growl or attempt an attack. She cries. Tears run down her cheeks. Essa eyes me, showing me she's completely unsure of what to do.

We both just stare at the child. I've never seen any Harpy - child or otherwise - cry before. Something like pity moves in my chest, but I know I'm not allowed to feel that.

But there is something I can do.

I walk toward her slowly, ready to strike even though all she does is stare at me with tear-filled eyes.

"Where are the others?" I ask simply. She whimpers, but Essa holds up a readied pistol. She's old enough to know what that means.

"We left," she replies. Her voice is light and soft, like cotton candy at a carnival.

"Why?" I continue.

"Mama and Papa don't - didn't - like them. We're different from them."

"Where are the others?" I repeat forcefully. She sobs, sniffles, then points east.

"That way. That's where the others live. There are lots of them. Please let me go," she says. She's given us all of the infomration we need.

An encampment is set of east of the Harpy capital. I look at Essa, who returns my gaze pleadingly. She can't do it. I can tell that much.

I sigh deeply, then rush up to the girl, snapping her neck. I know she'll only be unconscious for seconds, so I whip out my dagger and slit her throat. She fades away in my arms, her dust carried away by the wind.

After that, there is only silence beyond the crackling fire. I answer before Essa has a chance to ask.

"She didn't feel anything. She was unconscious." Still, Essa shivers, holding herself.

"I couldn't do it. I'm sorry, it was just the look in her eyes," she murmurs. I stand up and place a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"It's never easy to kill a child. Even a Harpling," I confide. She nods as we gather ourselves for the night, but her gaze remains far off into the night sky.

"We'll sleep here tonight. You take first watch. You never know if there were others," I say.

I leave Essa to her thoughts as I lie down beside the fire. Secretly, those young eyes are still staring at me, still pleading for me to let her live.

I fall asleep with her delicate voice just bouncing around through my mind.

Author: Lissette E. Manning
Publisher: L.D.B. Press
Publication date: October 2nd 2013
Genre: Fantasy / Greek Mythology / Science Fiction

~ Synopsis ~

Her wish is their command.

Artemis has a plan. Her eye has fallen on the throne of Olympus, and she'll do anything to get it. She knows Zeus won't give it up so easily, but she's determined to dethrone him, nonetheless. Her father is known for his infamous romps amongst the mortals. Surely, there must be something she can use against him?

When her attention is drawn to Callidora Spiros, she soon realizes that her father does indeed have secrets. Brazen and beautiful, the girl piques her interest in more ways than one, though Artemis isn't quite sure as to how she's truly tied to the gods. Intent on discovering what her father has kept hidden for so long, she'll need as much help as she can get.

Demanding and willful, Artemis has been known to achieve her every whim. With the bat of an eyelash, or a simple word, she's wrapped many a man around her little finger. The gods, on the other hand, aren't so easy to bring around. Nevertheless, she's going to do everything possible to gain the upper hand. Mount Olympus will be hers, with or without the help of the other gods and goddesses.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 3 / 5

The Goddess's Wishes puts its own spin on Greek mythology with Artemis as the main character. Normally, the goddess of the hunt is described as chaste, but in this novel, she's the opposite. I don't mind things being changed up - I liked the way the author changed Artemis and had her after Zeus's power.

This book is a quick read - I read it in one sitting, and it held my attention. I wanted to see if Artemis would succeed in overthrowing her father. The idea was really interesting to me because it's obvious she isn't close to him and that not many of the other gods and goddesses are either. She's carefully testing who she can or cannot trust in her quest, and I thought even if she thinks she can trust someone - why would they be okay with her taking over? Wouldn't they want to take over themselves?

This lead me to not trust anyone even if Artemis believed they would help her. Most of the others said it was futile to try to take over, and they seemed happy with the way things are. I couldn't decide why Artemis wasn't happy herself. She seemed to have everything she wanted, and I think the only thing she didn't have that she wanted was ultimate power over EVERYTHING and EVERYONE.

Ultimately, the main plot is interesting, but there weren't any subplots that I could tell. There was enough to keep me reading until the end; however, I wanted there to be more to the characters and more to the story than just Artemis's desire to overthrow Zeus. The Goddess's Wishes has a lot of potential to go further than it did, and I'm hoping the story and characters will be more fleshed out in the next book.

~ Excerpt from Chapter 1 ~

Artemis materialized in the middle of her brother, Apollo's, bedroom with a resounding pop. A smile of satisfaction spread across her lips as she watched him scramble out of bed in search of his clothes. A look of annoyance clouded the features of the demi-goddess lying on his bed, clutching the bed sheets tightly to her chest.

Her silvery-yellow eyes narrowed as she stared at the demi-goddess, Dyina, and pointed to the adjacent door. "Get out!"

"Damn it, Artemis!" Apollo growled as he tugged his chiton into place. "Can't you knock?"

Artemis grinned, and made her way toward the chaise lounge tucked into the left corner of the room. "Where's the fun in that, brother?" she quipped, lowering her slender frame onto the settee.

The demi-goddess rummaged about the room for her clothes, her blue eyes sending imaginary vicious daggers in Artemis's direction. The goddess's smile never faltered as she watched her brother and his current paramour move about the room. Apollo took a moment to show Dyina to the door, his shoulders taut with tension as he swung the door closed.

"I'm assuming you're here for a favor of some kind?" Apollo asked, running a hand through his thick blond curls.

"Something like that."

He approached the table nearby, and poured himself a glass of red wine. He knocked back his drink in one gulp, and promptly poured himself another before taking a seat in the chair in front of the lounge she reclined on.

"What now?"

She bestowed him with a knowing gaze, her lips quivering with effort as she tried to hold back her excitement. "I want Mount Olympus, brother, and you're going to help me get it."

He snorted with amusement, and downed the glass of wine. "A lofty goal, Sis, but that's not likely."

Her smile disappeared, her eyes narrowing to half slits. "I expected more from you."

He summoned the pitcher of wine, and filled his glass once more. "Do you honestly think dear old Dad is going to give up the throne so easily?"

"No, but that's where you come in. He owes us. Besides, we've always been his favorites."

"Whether he owes us or not, Artemis, you'll never get him to step down."

"Not yet, but I will. And when I do, Mount Olympus will be mine!"

Apollo tossed his head back, and laughed heartily. "So you think. There's a good many of us with an eye on Daddy's throne. You're not likely to get it, nor are any of us."

Her nostrils flared outward with anger as she stared at her twin brother. "You owe me."

"I'll pay up. Eventually."

She sat up straight, staring deep into her brother's eyes. "You'll pay up now, brother dear. Zeus has been careless, and I intend to unmask him before the other gods and goddesses."

"How, pray tell?"

A photograph materialized in thin air as she flicked her hand about. He deftly caught the glossy paper between his fingers, and examined it.

"Who is she?"

Order of the Seers
Chapter 1: The End

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Liam was losing his patience. “Aw, come on! Are you serious? You can’t
want to ride this thing again!”

Instead of answering her older brother, Lilli remained in her seat as
the Ferris wheel conductor looked on expectantly, hand outstretched and
waiting for another two tokens.

The way Lilli’s skinny arms hugged her book bag while she stared
blankly at the pressed metal floor of their “Fairy Land Caboose” made it
hard for Liam to stay angry. The sight of her looking so dejected softened
him enough to give the conductor his fifth set of tokens in less than 45
minutes. Liam settled back into his seat just as the lap bar clamped down
uncomfortably against his thighs.

“Lilli, say something. Why’d you drag me out here if you were just gonna
sulk? I hate the carnival, you know that.”

“I know something… okay? Just… trust me. We have to stay here.” Her
voice was so low he could barely hear her over the wind-up music that was
blaring from the overhead speakers.

“Did Mom say something to you?”

Lilli responded to his question with silence and a barely discernable
shake of her head back and forth. He tried again.

“Lilli! Did Mom…?”

“Yes,” she snapped.

They both fell silent again as Liam took in the latest weird thing of the
day. Lilith Knight, or Lilli as she preferred to be called, had always been
strange. Even when she was five, she could beat Liam at chess lazily, without
even thinking about it. She would find things and give them to you before
you asked for them. Before you, or even she, knew why. Up until recently,
he thought she was just a freak. No biggie. All little sisters are like that, he told
himself.

It was only in the past few months that his perception of her began
to shift, after her prediction that he would catch his new girlfriend, Krista,
kissing his teammate Lance in the locker room after their championship
game. At the time, he’d brushed off her premonition as meddling. Krista
wasn’t even his girlfriend and his team was 1-1 with the whole basketball
season ahead of them.

He’d forgotten her warning completely until two months later when he
ran back into the locker room after winning the championship to get the
jacket he’d left behind and immediately smelled Krista’s perfume. When he
found them, two thoughts overshadowed the scene unfolding in front of
him. The first was that what they were doing wasn’t really “kissing,” though
he could see how a sheltered thirteen-year-old would describe it that way.
His second thought was that Lilli was right; she was exactly right. He was so
stunned by Lilli’s accuracy that he didn’t even bother to disturb them, leaving
his new ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend to their business. From that
moment, Liam understood that Lilli wasn’t just a freak, or more accurately,
that she wasn’t a freak at all. She was special…gifted.

The sound of Lilli’s sniffling followed by the trembling of her body
as she began to cry uncontrollably broke the long silence that had fallen
between them. What the…, Liam half-mumbled as his mind swung from
irritation to absolute bewilderment. Slowly and deliberately, Liam moved his
palms down the front of his face as he fought the urge to shake the truth
right out of her and end whatever this was. But he couldn’t. She’s so brittle
already, he thought, without any idea as to why. So instead, he reached out
to envelop his sister in his arms, trying to soothe her and comfort her from
some unknown force.

“Lilli, it’s all right. I’m sorry, okay? Don’t cry. Just… tell me what’s going
on. Why are we here?”

My name is Cerece Rennie Murphy, but, among my 5 siblings, I am known and teased by my superhero name, Wonder Worry, (and yes, I am a little worried about your reaction to what I just said). While in my youth, I used my superpower to whip minor setbacks into epic tragedies in 60 seconds flat, I no longer have the time to hone the skills I once possessed, which were handed down to me VERY CAREFULLY by my mother and her mother before.

Instead of spending my days imagining worst case scenarios, I am now on the front lines of true disaster prevention – treading the fine line between boo-boos and permanent brain damage, fighting crimes of curiosity, omission, absent-mindedness and sleep deprivation. I carry others down the winding, bumpy road of youth that starts out at the nexus of unique and brilliant but intersects with narcissistic serial killer at some distant point I hope fervently to avoid. As you might have guessed, I am a wife and mother of 2 small children. Luckily, my family lights up the sky so I never stumble too hard or lose my way.

I would lament the luxury of needless worry, but alas, I don’t have the energy. As I write this, I am losing a battle fought between my trusty sponge and a hardened glob of half-eaten cheese that traveled from the kitchen to the living room rug in the palm of a very small, but mischievous hand. Its stronghold on the fibers suggests occupancy of at least 2 days, but I’ll never know for sure. Rather than despair, I’ve chosen to retreat to my keyboard, noting that I have won the war - most of the rug is un-cheesed.

Before I worried. Now, I write.

I look forward to slowly, quietly, in my own shy way, becoming a part of this community. If you would like to get to know me and my work a bit better, you can visit me...

~ Synopsis ~
Elijah is nothing special. He's just a skinny kid doing his best to stay one step ahead of starvation and the people who would have him locked away in a labour camp - just another Runner. But what he stumbles upon in a forest in Hampshire shows him that the harsh world he knows will become an even more sinister place, unless he can stop it.

As past and present and parallel dimensions collide, freedom becomes the last thing on his mind as he is suddenly faced with a battle to save his world from extinction. But before Elijah can find the courage to be the hero the world needs, he must banish his own demons and learn to trust his friends. And all the while, the sinister figure of Maxwell Braithwaite looms, his path inextricably bound to Elijah's by a long dead physicist, and hell bent on stopping Elijah, whatever the cost.

~ My Review ~

My Rating: 4 / 5

Runners is a different kind of dystopia with adding science fiction into the mix. I was taken by complete surprise when the story took a direction I never saw coming, even though I had read the synopsis and thought I understood what the story was all about.

When I began reading, I couldn't help but feel like I had been mislead. The story seemed really slow with much of the same things happening over and over - one of the group would get hurt, or their shelter was discovered and they would be forced to leave. Now that I look back, I still think the book took too long getting to the meat of the story, but the premise is still genius. It just would have worked better to get there sooner so as not to lose the reader in the process.

The main character, Elijah, was so frustrating! He made terrible decisions that cost the group their sense of safety and the fragile trust they had in him. Xavier never liked him and had wanted to leave him in the beginning, which I thought was harsh but as the story progressed, I started thinking maybe they should have left him behind. I soon learned Xavier is a hypocrite as he's keeping secrets of his own - huge secrets that I never would have guessed in a million years.

Sharon Sant's writing is flawless, and she can definitely bring you into her world without any distractions. The world she describes is harsh and depressing, which is exactly as she intended in order to tell this story. There were a few words I had to look up which I found out were British slang so then I didn't feel so bad for not knowing their meanings right away. I was happy with the shocking direction the story took and still can't get this world and these characters out of my mind.
