Book Blitz ~ Rush (The Game #1) by Eve Silver

Release Date: June 11, 2013
Publisher: Harper Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
So what’s the game now? This, or the life I used to know?

When Miki Jones is pulled from her life, pulled through time and space into some kind of game—her carefully controlled life spirals into chaos. In the game, she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says the game isn’t really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival, and the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn’t. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.

Teaser #1:
He smiles, a faint curve of his lips that reveals the barest hint of a long dimple carved in his right cheek. “No, but I can read your expression. And I’ve been doing this long enough that I know what most people tend to think when they first open their eyes.”
“Doing what long enough?”
“This,” he says, and nothing more.
A second of silence stretches into two. Though I can’t see behind his glasses, I have the feeling he’s not looking at me anymore, that he’s scanning the area, looking for…something. But as I stare at him, I see me—tiny distorted reflections of me in the shiny, convex lenses.

Teaser #2:
I stare at the things in front of me: the Drau. I can’t look away.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember Jackson talking about Medusa.
Don’t look at their eyes.
Their mercury eyes.
They’re poison.
They will kill me.

Teaser #3:
Color and sound explode, too bright, too loud. Even the air on my skin feels like it’s too much. My fingers go lax. The bag’s handle slides down my palm, then along my fingers to the tips, impossibly slow. The world tips and tilts and I flail for balance.
Luka grabs my hand and holds tight.
I blink. My house, my open front door, Dad, they’re all gone. My breath comes in short gasps and every muscle in my body feels like it’s knotted up tight.
I’m standing in a grassy clearing bounded by trees.
The lobby.
We’ve been pulled.

~Synopsis~
Thalli has fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds left to live. The toxic gas that will complete her annihilation is invading her bloodstream. But she is not afraid.

Thalli is different than others in The State. She feels things. She asks questions. And in The State, this is not tolerated. The Ten scientists who survived the nuclear war that destroyed the world above believe that emotion was at the core of what went wrong - and they have genetically removed it from the citizens they have since created. Thalli has kept her malformation a secret from those who have monitored her for most of her life, but when she receives an ancient piece of music to record as her community's assigned musician, she can no longer keep her emotions secreted away.

Seen as a threat to the harmony of her Pod, Thalli is taken to the Scientists for immediate annihilation. But before that can happen, Berk - her former Pod mate who is being groomed as a Scientist - steps in and persuades the Scientists to keep Thalli alive as a test subject.

The more time she spends in the Scientist's Pod, the clearer it becomes that things are not as simple as she was programmed to believe. She hears stories of a Designer - stories that fill her mind with more questions: Who can she trust? What is this emotion called love? And what if she isn't just an anomaly, but part of a greater design?

~My Thoughts~
Wow! I'm just now coming up for air after immersing myself in Thalli's story. The synopsis had caught my attention the moment I saw it, and I couldn't help but to try to think of different ways this story might go. With all of the twists and turns, I'm still catching my breath and never could have imagined a story like I just read - it was so much more than I was expecting.

The world that Krista McGee creates is absolutely creative and so shocking...to have human emotions ripped away from us in order to have a peaceful productive society? Would the lack of feeling be worth the peace? Would it be worth it to live without experiencing emotions? These are some of the questions I found myself thinking about because I know everything comes at a price.

What happens when a member of this society begins to feel? They're annihilated, and that's exactly the word used, which conjured up images of being blown to bits. How is that keeping peacefulness and productivity? Annihilated. Not just "terminated" or "executed." Very strong word of destruction. When Thalli finds herself experiencing sadness or joy or curiosity  she has a hard time hiding these emotions from those around her. She slips up, is found out, and is scheduled to be annihilated.

I don't want to talk about the plot itself because it's so intricate and complicated, I fear I might give something away without realizing it. I do want to express how much I love the way this story was told and how it can launch a thousand interesting and thought provoking discussions. I was kept on my toes - just when I thought I was figuring out what was going on, something would happen, taking me in a new direction. It was a fun ride!

I thought about the Vulcans from Star Trek throughout the novel because they find emotions to be "illogical," and Thalli's friend, Rhen, made me think of Spock. She'd say, "I don't understand," when Thalli would ask her a question, and I knew she really didn't understand because of the way she thinks. The idea of whether emotions are okay to have or whether they're destructive to us as human beings is the central theme of this book. I loved how many questions about life in general and how to live are raised by this story. I was given much to think about.

If you're a fellow dystopia lover like me and looking for something new and fresh in the genre, this book needs to be the next one you read! :)

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review as a stop on the blog tour.

Last year, Kayla's world imploded. Her beloved father died, leaving her alone with a narcissistic mother who is quick to criticize her daughter's appearance. During her winter break from college, Kayla's dangerous obsession with losing weight begins. Kayla feels like her world changes for the better overnight. Kayla's struggles with anorexia and bulimia reach a breaking point and she is forced to confront her body image issues in order to survive. She wonders if Cameron could be the one to help heal her from the pain of her past.

New Adult Contemporary - Ages 17+ due to language and sexual situations.

~My Thoughts~
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for the blog tour.

Have you ever felt the pressure to be thin? To lose so much weight you can see your bones sticking out? The author dedicates this book "to the girls who've never felt beautiful." I'm one of those girls. I haven't ever had an eating disorder, but I've definitely felt the pressure to look a certain way. And that pressure is everywhere, in magazines, TV, movies, music videos...it can even come from one's own mother, such as for Kayla.

After Kayla loses her father, there's no longer a buffer between her and her mother. Kayla's mother begins directing all of the anger from her grief at Kayla and her little sister. All of their lives, they've been told by their mother they're too fat and unlovable, but once their father dies, their mother completely focuses her time on driving that message home. Kayla has been listening to her mother for so long, she soon falls into the vicious cycle of anorexia and bulimia.

She meets Cameron, who has everything she's been looking for in a guy, and they begin dating. Cameron was perfect for her, not because he's handsome or intelligent but because he refused to give up on her. He loved her for who she is no matter what. That's real love. I felt Cameron's pain deeply when Kayla does her best to push him away. It hurt that Kayla didn't think she was worthy of his love, and it especially hurt when she began pushing everyone else in her life away as well to the point where she felt alone. I think she wanted to be alone with her disease.

Kayla's story is told beautifully where the reader is given a look inside anorexia and bulimia instead of simply reading about someone who's struggling with the diseases. By the end, I felt I knew what it was like to think the way Kayla did, and it was scary. I could see how easily a person can fall into the cycle of bingeing and purging and making promises of eating normally if she can just lose those last two or three pounds. This was an emotional roller coaster ride that didn't let go. There was grief, addiction, love, betrayal, and forgiveness. I felt every emotion as though I was in the situation myself.

I blazed through this book so fast it amazed me because normally I tend to read slowly. I couldn't help it - the story just pulled me in right away! I finished most of it in one night, staying up way later than I should, but it was definitely worth it. This book had me looking at anorexia and bulimia, two diseases I thought I knew a lot about from textbooks, in a completely new and personal way. I learned more about eating disorders from this story than I ever have studying them in a class, and you will, too.

When my sister and I were much much younger, our parents arranged for us to stay the night with a relative. Mom had surprised Dad with tickets to a Neil Diamond concert and booked a room for them to stay overnight at a hotel near the concert venue. Neil Diamond was one of her favorite singers ever. She also laid out an outfit for Dad to wear, which she never ever did. Dad was a bit taken aback, but he put it on anyway.

At the concert, when Neil Diamond stepped out on stage, Dad realized right away why Mom had picked out clothes for him - he was wearing the same outfit as Neil Diamond! I can only imagine how hard my parents started laughing at that moment. How very clever of Mom! I'd pay $100 to have seen the look on my dad's face when he made the connection! This has always been one of my favorite stories, and it's just one of the many memories of Mom that Dad will always treasure.

Most of what I do is connected in one way or another to my mom, and for my dad's birthday one year, my sister and I bought the three of us tickets to a Neil Diamond concert at that same venue. We knew Dad would love it - he doesn't go to concerts very often - and I loved seeing one of my mom's favorite singers live. I felt like a part of her was with us that night. We even played a Neil Diamond song at her funeral - I know she would've liked that.

~ Synopsis ~
No one would suspect shy Lily Calloway's biggest secret. While everyone is dancing at college bars, Lily stays in the bathroom. To get laid. Her compulsion leads her to one-night stands, steamy hookups and events she shamefully regrets. The only person who knows her secret happens to have one of his own.

Loren Hale's best friend is his bottle of bourbon. Lily comes at a close second. For three years, they've pretended to be in a real relationship, hiding their addictions from their families. They've mastered the art of concealing flasks and random guys that filter in and out of their apartment.

But when they go on a family boat trip, surrounded by open seas and limited male bodies in sight, Lily's confronted with a big fear. Only one guy on board can fill her addiction, and she's sworn off going there with Loren Hale ever again.

Now the only person who can truly help her can barely help himself.

~ My Review ~
I received a copy of this book to review for the blog tour.

I'm so excited to have read this book! I was sucked in from the very first paragraph, and I savored every word, every page, every chapter! The book was even better and more interesting than I thought it was going to be. I had no expectations going in, and I was absolutely stunned just by the first page. I knew this was going to be a book I wouldn't want to put down.

Thinking about it, it's kind of strange that I liked Lily and Lo (Loren but goes by "Lo") so much because they're basically rich spoiled kids doing whatever they want, whenever they want. If this had been a reality TV show, I probably wouldn't have liked them at all, but since this is a book with a character (Lily) narrating, I was given the opportunity to climb inside her head and know what she was thinking and feeling. What might be even stranger is the fact that I knew with certainty before I even picked up the book that I was going to like both Lily and Lo.

Throughout the book, I wondered what my life would be like if I lived like Lily and Lo. Is the freedom to do what they want worth the price? I don't think it is - for one thing, it's apparent they aren't really free because they're too busy covering up their respective addictions from their families, chained down to what their families expect them to be. Notice I say what and not who because status is everything to their families, and Lily and Lo shun this. They just want to be free of any and all expectations. Money doesn't seem to be important to them, and they definitely aren't the kind of "rich kids" who look down their noses at the "little" people, which is probably why I liked them so much.

I believe Lily and Lo don't even know who they are because their addictions make up an overwhelming component of their personalities. They're buried beneath their behaviors...who would they be without them? They're too afraid to know. They're enablers to each other - they clean up after one another and help each other hide the behaviors that wouldn't be acceptable to their families and the social circles they're in. I know I sound a lot more judgmental than I actually felt while reading. I didn't look down on Lily and Lo due to their problems because I could see the root of why those problems developed. I don't know what it is about them, but Lily and Lo are two very likable characters.

Lily and Lo's story made me think of the inequality there still is with promiscuous girls vs. promiscuous guys. I want to know why it seems to be more socially acceptable for a guy to rack up a high number of sexual partners, but it isn't for a girl? When Lily talked about herself as being unlovable because she's a dirty person, I thought how could these guys think of Lily as a slut or a piece of trash to be thrown away? They're having sex with someone they don't know, too. They're on equal ground, right?! Then there's a point in the book when it's apparent one of her past conquests believes exactly that about her. Like he's so much better. Please. If Lily's a slut, then he's a man-whore.

I. Love. This. Book. It's one of my new favorites, and I can't recommend it enough. It's witty, clever, real, and dazzling. I couldn't take my eyes off the train wreck that is Lily and Lo's life. You won't want to, either.

~ Synopsis ~
Aspen Dwyer, recently emancipated from foster care, is searching for a place to hide from a past with secrets too dark to share. Honey Creek, Ohio, presents itself as the best place to start a new life and stay undercover. There she meets Colton Moraine, a man with strong family ties and an even stronger sense of loyalty. His boisterous, loving family welcomes Aspen with warmth she hasn't felt in years. She's surprised at how quickly and deeply she falls for Colton. When a dangerous criminal comes to Honey Creek, intent on his revenge against her, Aspen must choose between two options. Should she stay and risk her life and the rejection of the people she's grown to love? Or should she run again, and leave behind any chance of a happy future?

~ My Thoughts ~
From the moment Aspen began telling her story, I loved her and wanted to wipe away all of her pain. She has a quiet strength even after everything she's been through, which I really admired about her. She uses swimming and painting as two healthy ways to escape from her problems and the pain when it gets to be too much to bear, yet another thing I respected about her. I was amazed with the way she handled her emotions - it showed her maturity and strength. Understandably she has a difficult time with trust and has decided to build a wall around her heart. Enter Colton.

I could see right away Colton would be good for Aspen to meet and get to know. They start off on the wrong foot, and their interactions due to misunderstandings between them in the beginning were funny and endearing. He's friendly and helpful with the sunniest of dispositions. Colton seemed almost too good to be true. Almost! There are good guys like him out there! His aunt was a great character, too. She reminded me of my aunts with her warm personality and the way she takes in Aspen like one of her own nieces.

As much as I loved Colton, I really hated his sister, Elise. I know that's a really strong word, but I can't express how much I despised her character! Aspen described her as a close friend, but in my eyes Elise was the complete opposite. What friend would try to force an interview on you when you obviously didn't want to step into the spotlight? Elise even displays some stalker-like behavior in the name of "journalism." She wants a job at a local newspaper, and what she fails to realize is that using your "friend" to get a job you really want is selfish and egocentric. At one point, I had to put my Kindle down for fear of throwing it instead. She grated on my nerves from the first page she showed up and didn't stop even at the end. All I could think about was protecting Aspen from Elise's machinations!

What I liked about this story was that Aspen's narration highlighted what life is like for a young girl as a former foster kid. There's rarely a sense of stability - at any time for any number of reasons a foster child could be moved to a new family or have to switch schools. Speaking as someone who once worked with foster kids, I know about the plethora of issues these kids face. This book can give people an idea what it's like for those who have been in foster care. Sadly there remains a stigma against kids in foster care, but I have hope that one day it'll be broken.

I don't want to say too much about the plot so as not to give anything away. I will say I had a good time reading this story - at different times I laughed, cried, grimaced, and smiled. It'll pull at your heartstrings and stay with you long after you've read it!
