Think Out Loud #27 ~ Joss Whedon + Romance = Not Gonna Happen

Have something you'd like to talk about that's non-bookish? Join this meme hosted by Thinks Books! Get to know your fellow bloggers outside the bookish realm! Click here for the 411. Every Thursday or whenever you can! :D

Warning: If you haven't seen Buffy or Angel, spoilers are ahead!!! You've been warned! ;)

So I've come to the conclusion after watching seven seasons of Buffy and two seasons of Angel (so far) that Joss Whedon is against romance. Both shows have several examples of this, where he makes you care about the characters, those characters start to grow on each other, you want a romance to blossom, and then BAM! He pulls the rug out from under you while ripping your heart out in the process. Happens all too often. *Sigh*

Watching Buffy, I LOVED Angel and Buffy though from the start. Edward has nothing on Angel - Angel puts him to shame. But do they make it as a couple? Nope. Then there was the guy whom Buffy met at college - Riley. I never liked him, so it was cool with me that their relationship didn't work out.

Spike came along, and I didn't like him at all but over time he grew on me. Then I LOVED him, too, but was smart enough to be cautious this time. The whole push-pull thing between Buffy and Spike is enough to put the angst of all my teenage years combined to shame! It didn't end well for them. Man I was so upset!

Don't forget Xander! Cordelia and Xander were an item for like a second. Then he started dating Anya, and that...well, I forget if that ended well. Probably not. Willow was in love with Xander, but he only had eyes for Buffy. Buffy wasn't into him, though, not with Angel around. Eventually Willow became involved with a werewolf, Oz, but that ended of course. She then came out and started a relationship with Tara, who was soon KILLED. Gah!

On Angel, it's hinted at that Angel might be developing a thing for Cordelia, but I know better. Cordelia fell in love (probably more like lust since she only knew him for like a whole whopping one day) with the Groosalugg when she accidentally fell into the Host's home world. But he had to stay there, and she had to come back. Wesley recently admitted crushing on Winifred, but do I dare think a relationship is gonna happen?

See what I mean? I love these shows, don't get me wrong, and I am a HUGE fan of Joss Whedon. I just want some good romance that doesn't necessarily have to take over the show. Obviously, it's too late for this to be rectified since both shows aren't new anymore, but it doesn't stop me from wanting what I want.

What's the lesson I've learned?
Joss Whedon + Romance = Not Gonna Happen

Still going to cross my fingers for Wesley and Winifred. Somebody should be lucky in love for at least a season or two. :)

Blog Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway ~ The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe

Hey guys! I'm so excited to be hosting a stop for The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant Blog Tour hosted by Kismet Book Touring.
The full tour schedule is at the bottom of this post. Click here for more information about each of the blog tour stops.

Title: The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant
Series: (The V Trilogy #1)
Author: Joanna Wiebe
Publication date: January 14th 2014
Published by: BenBella Books
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

~ Synopsis ~

After her mother's death, 16-year-old art prodigy Anne Merchant moves from sunny California to the cold woodlands of Wormwood Island, Maine for what is supposed to be a fresh start. She is the newest student of Cania Christy, an elite boarding school that is as filled with secrets as it is with the world's most privileged - and competitive - teens.

From the first day of school, Anne finds herself thrust into the Big V competition, an intense race to the top of the class. With enviable talents, she quickly becomes the enemy of every junior seeking the Big V - especially Harper, the presumed frontrunner.

Like every student, she is assigned a guardian, and a unique mission. Anne's assignment is to "look deeper." Anne is determined to succeed, and won't let anything - not even her distractingly beautiful neighbor Ben - get in the way. But the deeper she looks the more questions arise, and the more she is forced to reexamine all of her assumptions - about the school, her classmates and even herself.

As layers of secrecy deepen, Anne leans on the friendship of Molly, a lifelong islander, and Pilot, the only junior not competing for the Big V, to make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world. But when people start disappearing, Anne uncovers a stunning truth that she must face head on - before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.

How I Arrived at the Title for My Book

I am masterfully bad at dreaming up titles for the stories I write. Masterfully bad. As in I could teach a graduate-level course called How Not to Title Your Story. Which probably isn't a good title for a course.

But that's not the worst part.

The worst part is that I actually loooove my awful titles. I openly, passionately believe they're really good. (Delusion is a defense mechanism for writers. Or at least for me.) I was surprised in my undergrad writing class to hear a few students comment on how bad they considered my short-story titles, like "There's a Hole in My Boat" and "Prep School Boys' Last Chance to Dance", to be. After all, who doesn't like a long title? A literal title? A title that matches the voice of the story you're about to read? Evidently, quite a few people.

In the world of YA novels, my favorite titles are dark and length, and they generally feature startling visuals or a little poetic alliteration. Like The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Mirk and Midnight Hour, and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Long, dark titles that take up the whole cover. Beautiful.

I wasn't the one who came up with the name for my novel, The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (Jan 14) - which is long and slightly dark - but I did come up with a boatload of options that were shot down. Let me entertain you briefly with a handful of them (and tell me in the comments if you think they're total crap):

Before I Wake
(this was the working title when my publisher bought it)

The Blood Flowers

Miracles Darkly Done

Shadows and Tall Trees

The Mortician's Daughter

So if I didn't come up with The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant, who did? It started with yet another late-night brainstorming session with my husband Lance, who's both patient and creative (which are important qualities when naming; I lack the former).

He suggested, after I'd listed off a few doozies, The Education of Anne Merchant. It reminded me of one of my favorite albums from my high school years - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - so I thought I'd propose it to my editor Glenn.

Glenn liked it, too, but he noted that it could be improved with an adjective. He proposed the following:

Unfortunate

Regrettable

Unseemly

I loved Unseemly as a word. It's a seldom-used and rather dark word, which I dig.

And thus was born the title. Not of my mind, but of the indirect collaboration of my hub and my editor.

This is not the first book that has endured countless trips to the Naming Factory, countless spins of the Naming Wheel. Like most writers, I take comfort in knowing that other writers have been through what I'm going through - from naming books to dealing with rejection - so let's take a look at a few books that might've been called something else, had clearer heads not prevailed...

Stephenie Meyer submitted Twilight to agents under the name Forks.

Pride & Prejudice was rejected by a publisher when it was submitted under its original name First Impressions.

And the American classic Gone with the Wind was almost the pretty darn bland - but almost Bond-esque - Tomorrow Is Another Day.

There are dozens - surely 100s - of other would-be titles. Which ones are your faves? Share in the comments!

Joanna Wiebe is the author of The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant, now available online and in bookstores in the US and Canada. Amy Plum called the novel "deliciously dark," and VOYA said it's great for fans of Anna Dressed in Blood.

Blitz: Giveaway & Author Interview! ~ The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair

The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair
Publication date: January 17th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Katie wants to invest her heart and soul in love, but she may lose both to Hell.

Katie, a senior in high school, is torn between loving the "good" guy, her childhood friend Wes who makes promises he doesn't keep and abandons her when she needs him the most, and the "bad" guy, the new kid at school Josh who is also a real demon from Hell. Katie wants someone who pays attention to her and puts her first, but what is she willing to give up to find him?

~ Interview with the Author: Pembroke Sinclair ~

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

I started the story (Coming from Nowhere) in high school, and it was a competition between me and a few other girls on the swim team. Our teammates were supposed to be the judges, but no one finished their stories. I think I may have been the only one to revisit and rewrite it years later.

2. Writing can be a difficult job, what inspires you to keep going?

Compulsion. If I don't write, it makes me crabby. It's a stress release for me. Plus, the voices in my head get very insistent.

3. What are you working on now? What's next?

Currently, I am working on a nonfiction book about zombies. Next will be the sequel to THE APPEAL OF EVIL.

4. What's your writing process, schedule, or routine?

I squeeze it in whenever I can. With a full-time job and a family, time is a luxury I don't have, but I try to write whenever I find a spare moment.

5. Who is your favorite book character of all time? Why?

If you're talking about a book I wrote, it would have to be Krista from my undead books (LIFE AFTER THE UNDEAD and DEATH TO THE UNDEAD). She is tough and witty, yet still full of issues.

If you're talking about a book I've read, I can't really say. Over the years, so many characters have intrigued me, and not one of them really stands out in my mind.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Be persistent and patient. Publishing is a rough world filled with "Nos." But it only takes one yes to make everything all right!

7. What's your favorite quote?

"Do. Or do not. There is no try." From the wise and wonderful Yoda. It can be applied to any aspect of life, and it's very true.

8. Who would you most like to have a cup of coffee with? (Dead or alive) Explain...

The person who is going to make sure my books are seen by everyone in the world. I'm sure we'll need to come up with a marketing plan.

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?

When people don't respond to emails. That drives me insane! Especially if it's the only way you have to communicate with them.

10. Tell us something quirky about you.

Orange pop is my weakness.

11. Favorite comfort food?

Anything with cinnamon and no nuts in it.

12. Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Wars, although I enjoy Star Trek too.

13. Sunrises or Sunsets?

Both.

LIFE AFTER THE UNDEAD was a Top Ten Finisher in the Preditors and Editors Reader's Poll in the YA category and the cover art category.

In April, I have a middle grade novel called THE IFS coming out, which will be published by Little Devil Books. I also have two picture books that will be available from eTreasures Publishing. I have my Master's in English, and I am a freelance content editor for Musa Publishing, as well as a former content and line editor for eTreasures Publishing.

I love the sound of this book! The bad boy is a demon from hell? And the protagonist, Katie, is trying NOT to fall in love with him? Count me in! Plus, the good guy, Wes, doesn't sound all that good to me. Making promises he doesn't keep? Abandoning Katie when she needs him the most? I want to find out how that makes him a good guy, lol. Almost sounds like the demon is my choice, except for, you know, all that possibly losing your heart and soul to Hell.

I also loved the interview with the author. Her favorite quote from Yoda is awesome, and I agree it can be applied to life in general.

Discussion: A Lack of YA Horror?

Last summer, I was at Barnes & Noble perusing the YA section (always head there first!) when I happened to overhear a man asking an employee to help him find a YA horror novel for his teenage daughter's birthday present. After an unsuccessful search, she recommended a H.P. Lovecraft novel. He thanked her, and she left. I personally haven't read anything by H.P. Lovecraft, which I plan to since I believe he had a profound effect on today's horror, but my husband has warned me it isn't easy reading.

The father looked as though he was unsure about buying the book, and I started talking to him, wanting to help him find something she might like better. I know if I were sixteen, I probably wouldn't be too enthusiastic about H.P. Lovecraft. I told him it isn't easy reading, then cursed myself because I just made it sound like I thought his daughter was an idiot. I quickly said I meant that it reads a lot differently than horror novels we're used to today. I explained it's much more subtle and that even my husband said at times he struggled with the writing holding his attention.

He said he knew I didn't mean anything by what I had said at first (whew!), and we started looking in YA again. I suggested many different books that were as close to horror as I could find, one of those being ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD. To my horror (haha, pun intended), there was almost nothing at the store that could be considered horror to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but I struggled to find something awesome even though I had suggested a lot of books. Every book I recommended, he shot down, saying his daughter wouldn't like it. Not even ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD!!! O.O

I wasn't offended, just frustrated because I wanted to help sooo much and put my knowledge of YA to good use! So...what got me thinking about all of this? A blitz I'm posting tomorrow for THE APPEAL OF EVIL by Pembroke Sinclair - the author has written honest-to-goodness YA horror novels that are going on my TBR. I didn't really end up helping him unfortunately. I can't remember if he ended up picking out something or not. Maybe he got her a gift card? Always a good idea if you aren't sure what to pick up a bookworm.

There aren't enough YA horror novels out there in my opinion. While zombies definitely belong in the horror genre, I'd also love to see horror novels without zombies. I want the kind of horror like Stephen King, Peter Straub, in YA form. It'd be so cool to read about haunted houses, ghosts, and other freaky stuff that will scare the pants off of me! LOL

I miss Christopher Pike books SO much. I'm not sure he's written anything recently, but I've collected most of the books of his I grew up reading. My favorites are Witch, Whisper of Death, Monster, and Road to Nowhere. WITCH makes me cry every time - there's a particular scene that is so sweet and so sad, no matter how many times I've read this book, the tears are brought out immediately. The same for my sister, and sometimes I'm convinced the girl has a heart of stone, lol.

What do you guys think? Is there a lack of YA horror? Do you have any titles to recommend that I may be missing?

E.J. Wesley's Winter Thrills & Chills Blog Tour

Hey guys! Welcome to my stop on E.J. Wesley's Winter Thrills and Chills Tour for his Moonsongs Series. This tour is running January 6 - 17 and consists of reviews, interviews, top tens, guest posts and of course, giveaways! Be sure to check out the tour page for the full list of stops.

~Book 1  Blood Fugue~

"Some folks treated the past like an old friend. The memories warmed them with fondness for what was, and hope for what was to come. Not me. When I thought of long ago, my insides curdled, and I was left feeling sour and wasted."

Jenny Schmidt is a young woman with old heartaches. A small town Texas girl with big city attitude, she just doesn't fit in. Not that she has ever tried.

Life has pummeled her heart into one big, lonely callus. She has no siblings, both parents were dead by sixteen, and her last grandparent - and caretaker - was in the ground before she turned twenty-one. She's the last living member of her immediate family. Or so she thinks...

"We found my 'grandfather' sitting at his dining room table. An entire scorched pot of coffee dangled from his shaky hand. His skin was the ashen gray shade of thunderclouds, not the rich mocha from the photo I'd seen. There were dark blue circles under each swollen red eye. A halo of white hair skirted his bald head, a crown of tangles and mats. Corpses had more life in them."

Suddenly, instead of burying it with the dead, Jenny is forced to confront the past. Armed only with an ancient family journal, her rifle, and an Apache tomahawk, she must save her grandfather's life and embrace her dangerous heritage. Or be devoured by it.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 5 / 5

In BLOOD FUGUE, we're introduced to Jenny and her best friend, Marshal. Life has dealt Jenny some low blows. The fact that she hasn't buckled under the crap she's dealt with is not only amazing (I totally would not been sane or comprehensible) but shows her strength. She's snarky, fun to hang around with, and I would love to be her bestie! Plus with her purple fauxhawk and my pink hair, we'd make quite the pair!

And can I just say how much I love Marshal? The fact that he and Jenny stand out from everyone else in their tiny town with such confidence and flair makes me adore them even more. Marshal is such a cool guy, and it's obvious how much Jenny cares about him. It's also refreshing they're best friends without a romantic element to their relationship, proving a girl and a guy can be just friends. (You'll find out why they won't ever be more than just friends.)

BLOOD FUGUE is full of surprises with twists and turns. There's a huge revelation that I'll admit I never saw coming and was happy with the outcome. I think it adds to Jenny's badassery. This novelette is a quick and super fun read with the promise of more awesomeness ahead.

~ Book 2 Witch's Nocturne ~

After receiving an ancient tribal journal from her grandfather, Jenny is sent on a mission of discovery in an attempt to unravel clues to her family's monster hunting past. The journey becomes more than academic when she is asked to confront a coven of dangerous witches who plan to cast an insidious spell on the plains of West Texas.

~Book 3  Dark Prelude~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. Unfortunately, a lot of on-the-job training is required to be a monster hunter, and unlike her computer repair business, this gig could literally kill her.

DARK PRELUDE finds the feisty protagonist, Jenny, searching for her best friend Marshal's missing father in the midst of a freak, West Texas winter storm. To survive the frigid night, she'll have to deal with a hated town rival, face a monstrous creature no Moonsong hunter has ever encountered before, and undo a mysterious curse. Can she keep everyone alive? If not, who will pay the ultimate price?

~Book 4: Dragon's Game~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. She has already faced a werewolf, witches, and a troll. But nothing could prepare her for her latest confrontation...

DRAGON'S GAME, Moonsongs Book 4, finds Jenny out of her rural West Texas element, searching for an evil witch in an urban Houston nightclub. After attempting to help a handsome and mysterious stranger out of a jam, she finds herself on the run from a ruthless gang who are even more dangerous than they initially appear.

Forced into a twisted game of life and death, Jenny must navigate the complexity of a budding relationship, and somehow survive a night filled with unexpected horror and paranormal mystery.

DRAGON'S GAME is approximately 14,000 words or 45 pages of humor, horror and paranormal mystery. It is the fourth volume of the Moonsongs Books, an ongoing series of New Adult, urban fantasy novelettes by author E.J. Wesley.

~Book 5 Vampire's Ball~

Jenny Moonsong recently inherited the title of "monster hunter" and an ancient tribal journal / how-to manual passed down by her Apache ancestors. Being a girl of action, she has found herself particularly capable when it comes to battling the werewolves, trolls, and other supernatural denizens lurking in the Texas night. Until now.

VAMPIRE'S BALL, Moonsongs book 5, finds Jenny and her best friend Marshal in their most harrowing adventure yet. Traveling by boat to an extravagant masquerade party located at a Galveston Island mansion, Jenny must parlay with an ancient vampire in order to secure the release of the dragon princes, Isis. The unexpected return of an old "friend" turns the evening into chaos, and leaves Jenny and company once again fighting for survival amidst a sea of supernatural foes.

VAMPIRE'S BALL is approximately 12,500 words of humor, horror and paranormal mystery. It is the fifth volume of the Moonsongs Books, an ongoing series of New Adult, urban fantasy novelettes by author E.J. Wesley.

~Moonsongs Anthology~

The Moonsongs Anthology 1 collects the first three Moonsongs books - a series of New Adult paranormal-horror-action novelettes in one exciting volume. Follow Jenny and her best friend Marshal on their dangerous quest to unlock the secrets of her past.

Moonsongs Anthology 1 collects the three previously published Moonsongs adventures: BLOOD FUGUE (Book 1), WITCH'S NOCTURNE (Book 2), and DARK PRELUDE (Book 3).

~About the Author~

Growing up in small town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that's why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California - where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.
