Synopsis

Hollie Porter is the chairwoman of General Disillusioned: at twenty-five years old, she's saddled with a job she hates, a boyfriend who's all wrong for her, and a vexing inability to say no. She's already near her breaking point, so when one caller too many kicks the bucket during Hollie's 911 shift, she cashes in the Sweethearts' Spa & Stay gift certificate from her dad and heads to Revelation Cove, British Columbia. One caveat: she's going solo. Any sweethearts will have to be found on site.

Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she's providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can't stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn't mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day ... and maybe even herself in the process.

My Thoughts

MUST LOVE OTTERS came highly recommended from a friend of mine, and I'm SO glad she suggested I give this book a try. Omigod, I laughed so hard, but I had to try to hold it in because I was shaking with laughter and didn't want to wake up my husband. I contemplated reading out in the living room but didn't want to leave my warm comfy bed. I had to wipe tears away! My chest ached from attempting to keep the laughter from escaping. It was painful, lol.

It's an amazing talent to be able to convey snarky wit and humor in the manner that this husband-and-wife team, Eliza Gordon, did. They pulled it off big time. They SLAYED me. I bow down to their genius. Seriously.

In the beginning of MUST LOVE OTTERS, it was painful to read about how unhappy Hollie felt, and the way she was treated by her boyfriend, supervisor, co-workers, and even people whose emergency calls she takes at the 911 dispatch center - the ones who yell at her and don't really have emergencies. But the pain was replaced by wonderful changes Hollie makes. She has the courage to turn everything upside down in an effort to find out what she wants from life.

There were sweet, romantic moments that had me feeling so happy for Hollie. She's so relatable - I know what it feels like to be disenchanted with the way I'm living and worry that I'm settling for mediocrity rather than taking a risk for real and true happiness. The trip to Revelation Cove, Hollie's early birthday gift from her father, couldn't have come at a better time for her, and I think the name of the cove is perfect for what she went there to do. She has a huge revelation that changes her life forever.

I can't recommend MUST LOVE OTTERS enough. It's a read that will make you laugh so hard you'll feel like you've done a thousand sit-ups! Which is a terrific feeling.

  1. I've heard so many good things about this book. Plus, in my job with the police I work very closely with the 999 call centre (though I've never worked there), so this sounds like a must read for me.

    1. I couldn't work at the call center - it sounds way too stressful for me. But some of the calls she gets I couldn't help but laugh. They weren't all serious. I wouldn't be able to leave work at work - I'd end up taking home all those emotions with me. It's such a great book. I hope you love it as much as I do! :)

  4. I really want to read this one! I'm going to for sure. That is hilarious that you are reading next to your sleeping man and laughing your ass off but trying not to. I'm still smiling. The beginning sounds rough, but I can just see this one as in movie format with triumphant music at the end. Great review, Jennifer!

Oh, I LOVE the new ratings graphics! Did you create them?

    1. My laughter was shaking the bed, and I tried so hard not to laugh out loud but couldn't help myself! When it started out, I felt depressed for Hollie, but it doesn't last long because things start looking up. I kept thinking this should be a movie, too! Just wait until you read it! I hope you love it. No, scratch that. I KNOW you're gonna love this as much as I do! LOL! ;)

Thank you! I did! I basically took the image and edited it with some sparkles and a couple other touches to make the colors more vibrant. I want them a bit smaller so all five fit across the screen in one row, but I'm really happy with them! :)

  5. This sounds like a great read, Jennifer. Even if it is depressing at times. That Hollie is relatable adds to the realism of the story, I'm sure. And that you were trying so hard to contain your laughter so as not to wake up your hubby is so sweet! I just wake him up and then read the scene to mine! *ha* I'm definitely going to pick up this one. Great review, hon!

    1. It was only depressing at the beginning, which was necessary to set up the story. I almost put it down for a while but am glad I didn't. It makes you bond with Hollie and really care about her, so later, when things get better you celebrate right along with her. :) My husband probably wouldn't appreciate the scene if I woke him up for it, lol. ;) Thanks, Brandee! :D
